Sir Paul McCartney to appear in Peter Kay's new spoof TV talent show

Daily Mirror.co.uk 6/10/2008

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has teamed up with Peter Kay for a spoof talent show comedy.

Macca agreed to appear in a cameo role in Kay’s new Channel 4 project this month.

The pop icon has filmed several scenes for the comic’s mickey-taking Britain’s Got The Pop Factor And Possibly A New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly On Ice.

The two-hour programme is a spoof of TV talent shows and Kay dresses up to play some of the wannabe starlets, while Macca, 66, is believed to be appearing as himself.

A show source said: “They met at Sir Paul’s recent Anfield gig and Peter asked him if he could spare a day to do some filming.

“He loved the idea. He is a fan of Peter’s work. Getting Macca is a big coup.”

Other big names appearing in the show on Sunday, October 12, include rock band Kaiser Chiefs and TV presenter Cat Deeley.

He has also been asked to sing on the forthcoming spoof show winners Christmas single written by Take That's Gary Barlow and rumoured to feature a whole host of of stars from the world of music who are fans of Peter Kay and like the idea of taking on the X Factor winner's song for the festive number one slot.

Am I the only one who likes the idea of a spoof Band Aid style single to take on whatever ghastly bad cover version of an old power ballad that will be the X Factor's winners song for the Christmas #1 slot?

This was brilliant.

Where else would you see "definitive" versions of Ebony & Ivory and We All Stand Together, and Paul McCartney singing the Blankety Blank & Home and Away TV Theme tunes.

Four page spread in Heat Magazine this week (I've posted major snippets in the chart thread - but just a tempter as I know you'll all want to go out and buy the magazine  ) I've saved her comments about Sir Paul for the Beatles Forum.

I'll treasure this always. I still get goosebumps thinking about that day. Paul was a gentleman and a gentle man. I'd always been a huge fan. In fact, during my previous life as a man I used to work as a pianist on the Irish Ferries, and whenever we used to sail past the Mull of Kintyre I'd play it. It worked wonders for seasickness, and the image of the passengers leaning over the side of the boat clutching their giant Toblerones will stay with me forever. Just like the memory of this magical day.

Cheers for the info Norma.

The whole 4 pages worth were hilarious.

I wonder whether Paul will be involved some was in the Christmas special and corresponding single to take on the X-Factor winner.

I'm not sure whether Peter Kay and Take That will go ahead with this now. Some Scottish radio stations and papers are kicking up a fuss about the 'charity' element involved in the (Pop Factor) show and hence the single. Funny how they didn't object until they saw it overtaking Leon but there you go. I mean what kind of idiot believes there is a charity for 'crippled pole-dancers' ... forget that ... probably the same kind of idiot who would press the blue and red buttons together on their remote in the hope it would make up the 'Purple Button'.

Funny thing is .... I've watched the show again ... and it doesn't even mention 'charity' and the record in the same breath - it says (amounts varying from 13p at one point and 29p at another) from every TEXT message sent will go to the pole dancers charity!

Anyway for all we know - Peter Kay has probably donated his proceeds from the single to something anyway ... he just hasn't bragged!

Would love to see an epic Christmas song though - with Rick Astley, Ricky Wilson, Paul McCartney and a special appearance by R Wayne included.
