What singers became famous, that really can’t sing all that well?

I would nominate Bob Dylan, maybe he is a good songwriter, but a good singer.

All this proves is that you don't need to be a technically good singer to make it. The tone and quality is much more important in my opinion. John Lydon and Bob Dylan are much more recognisable than Heather Smalls for example.

Kylie Minogue

Dannii Minogue

Madonna (ever heard her massacre of Lennon's 'Imagine'? Painful)

Bob Dylan

Leonard Cohen

Joni Mitchell (although...I love her music)

Simon le Bon

Jason Donovan

Barney from New Order

Apart from The Byrds singing Mr Tambourine Man and Johnny Cash & June Carter singing It Ain't Me Babe ... I can't stand to hear anyone else sing a Bob Dylan song. His songs are made for his voice. I love him!

Norma

Madonna

Beyonce

Britney Spears

Sting

Paul Weller

Will Young

Bryan Ferry

all of Westlife

50 Cent

Ne-Yo

Indeed... Robert Smith is another one. Technically, all over the place, but there's a personality, charisma and distinctiveness in the voice that renders "technique" totally un-necessary, same for Ian Curtis, Courteney Love, Kurt Cobain, Ian McCulloch, Morrissey, Shaun Ryder....

Whereas there are plenty of singers who have the technical ability, whom I just find absolutely PAINFUL (Mariah, Whitney, X-Tina, Celine Dion, Leona Lewis.....).

I know which lot I'd rather listen to....

Barney from New Order

Heh heh, yes indeed. Although he did get better with time. Poor Barney - he was only ever meant to play guitar and keys.

Mind you, he's much better than Hooky.

It's a bit of vocalist (Dylan, Lydon, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, etc) versus singer (Sinatra, Elvis, Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Barbra, etc) debate.

But excluding great vocalists who were not great singers, then ........

Paula Abdul

Jason Donovan

Jennifer Lopez

Peter Noone

i dont get this list? its got loads of rappers on it

is this just a list of people you dont like?

actually think people like Boy George have actually got quite a good voice - just a pity that its been attached to loads and loads of nasty $h!te.

yeah and also type of song is important - Elvis Costello singing his songs from the 70s - good thing but singing Aznavour OMG! thats is like so wrong...Terry Hall covered it much better.

TBH Ross MacManus could be seen to being the better vocalist of the two MacManuses listed here - me and me mum were having that discussion the other night when bbc four was showing joe loss orchestra in Hammersmith Palais

Guess Joe Cocker could come into this, although I love his voice. I see Euro Music doesn't like Paul Weller's voice, but in my case, it was his voice that first got me listening to his music and I've become a huge fan of him, so I would have to disagree on that one. I would definately agree with him about 50 Cent though. I can't stand him or his voice.

they dont have to have a good singing voice though to be 'good'... weller isnt a technically good vocalist but it doesnt detract from his appeal.

Guess we all have different opinions on what makes a good vocalist and I stand by my opinion that Weller has a great voice. Guess you and I will have to agree to differ on this one.

lol.. thats the most obvious one.... maybe john lydon?.. heather small... dido... axl rose..

Axl Rose has an awesome voice, it's just annoying.

Madonna, without a doubt.
