June 9, 200619 yr Personally, I just don't like the song. It has no good lyrical content in it, the tune is irritating, and her voice grates on me My earlier post got deleted- I can't remember what I wrote but I guess someone thought it went a bit too far. Anyway, I agree entirely with the bits I've quoted from Ms.Presto's post here, she put it better than I did.
June 9, 200619 yr I take it that no one saw her on the BBC1 Breakfast Show this morning around 08:45 Hrs were she talked in some depth about the claims made against her. She reiterated that 100,000 people have seen her webcast, but they did not all see her webcast at the same time. Applying that to our BuzzJack site it like we (Phil saying we) have nearly 700 members, when the maximum we had on line at the same time is 149 (between a fifth & a quarter). She stated again that the lyrics about Punk Rockers with Flowers in their hair (was a metaphor to the Hippies movement). That the song is about how everyone cannot cope without technology and how nobody wants to rebel anymore - where people's aspirations are now not to change the world but just to be famous and rich. Although I thought what was most revealing was that she got some of her inspiration writing the song the day after her mobile phone got nicked when watching an old repeat of The Young Ones - So now we know it is about Vivian & Neil!
June 9, 200619 yr Indeed. The Young Ones... shouldn't be afraid, eh? Or was that before this Thom woman started writing songs influenced by them? lol.. I joke!

Well if that's the message she wanted to get across, then she's failed miserably. Still perhaps we should blame whoever nicked her mobile phone.
June 9, 200619 yr Actually I don't think she's failed THAT miserably.. No one bought her record, so she's not that rich and famous. So, she's actually done what she's apparently singing about. However, how true is one to ones "morals" if someone waved a huge contract and loadsa money infront of ones face? Do you think she'd rebel?
June 9, 200619 yr Well, to be completely honest you are going to have that with anything, in any era. No matter what it is about, or when it was written. in a wider context, that's not a reason to dislike the song or her. I don't quite understand whether you like the song, but are annoyed at people moaning about the "old days" or or just don't like the song full stop, though. But that's no matter. Anyhooo, I wasn't going to get too much involved with this debate but I have to point somethings out. I am willing to accept that maybe she is talented, has TECHNICALLY a good voice (although somewhat irritating), and was taught by a Beatle. Doesn't mean she is going to appeal to everyone. But again, that's not to say she's rubbish. Personally, I just don't like the song. It has no good lyrical content in it, the tune is irritating, and her voice grates on me, but I understand people may think she has technical ability. I kinda agree with that, technically her voice is sound enough, and certainly better than the likes of Kelly Clarkson or Hilary Duff... BUT - there is more than a small reek of hype about the whole enterprise, and the fact that an ex member of Bros is involved in managing her immediately raises the bullsh!t detector alerts... The lyrics of her song are also questionable, how can someone who writes songs which seem to hanker back the "good old days" (whatever that means..) square the circle that she does, in some small or major part, owe her success to the hi-tech world of the Internet, global mass communications, etc, etc... After all you didn't see the likes of Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page write songs with lyrics like "We wish all guitars were acoustic..."
June 9, 200619 yr On Radio 2 this morning Mark Goodier played tracks (every half hour) by many great artists and preceded it by telling a story of how the Record Company/Public Relations/Manager/Artist lied/conned the public/media on the way to success. It is hardly a new phenomemon in the annals of Rock'n'Roll History. I will post the "Top10 Rock'n'Roll Swindles" in the Retro Forum soon.

Well, yes I agree with you totally on how contradictory she is.. In a similar vain that was what i was saying in my post afterwards: ...if someone waved a huge contract and loadsa money infront of ones face? Do you think she'd rebel? Apparently she is also singing about a world "where people's aspirations are now not to change the world but just to be famous and rich" ...

Methinks the laddie doth protest too much....  Mate, we all know you love Sandi Thom.... And if one of your "Top 10" is gonna include the Sex Pistols/Malcolm McClaren, then I'm gonna tell you right now that you're talking sh!te if you believe the Malcolm McClaren version of events.....
June 9, 200619 yr The whole film is a pile of nonsense! Watch The Filth and the Fury instead... it has a much better account of the time.
June 9, 200619 yr The whole film is a pile of nonsense! Watch The Filth and the Fury instead... it has a much better account of the time. Absolutely. Julien Temple (the director of both documentaries) seriously regretted allowing himself to be manipulated by McClaren and so made "Filth and the Fury" as penance.....
June 9, 200619 yr Well that's cos Lydon won the rights to the Pistols through the courts in the '80s, didn't he. McClaren couldn't stick his nose in.
June 10, 200619 yr i dont hate her, but i wish i was a punk rocker is ok! Didnt deserve number one though.
June 11, 200619 yr There was NOTHING wrong with what Moyles did. He must have done over 50 parodies HERE of popular songs so far (Hollaback Girl, I Predict A Riot, LEt Me Entertain You, Stan...) It's not as if it's anything new. Why crtiisize it now when he's be doing them for nearly 10 years? :| Anyway, I wouldn't say I hate her, but I certainly hate Punk Rocker. It's appaling. Why it's so polualr I don't know. For me it's the worst number one since Babycakes... :puke2: Edited June 11, 200619 yr by RabbitFurCoat
June 11, 200619 yr The whole film is a pile of nonsense! Watch The Filth and the Fury instead... it has a much better account of the time. 100% agreement. that film is the truth of the whole punk scene....
June 11, 200619 yr the album is supposed to be a pile of poo. and about 6 minutes long or something daft like that
June 11, 200619 yr She is talentless. She can't sing to save her life and she puts decent female singers like Tori Amos and Sarah McClachlan to shame. They are the ones that sing not Sandi Thom. The clever olides have yet again turned this thread into a serious debate which I'm too lazy to become involved in (:P) so I shall say simply this: Pahahahahaha your name is hilarious. I think there are worse people alive than Sandi Thom however.
