Posted October 13, 200816 yr I love watching horror films, best genre of film imo. Apparently the originals to films such as the grudge, the ring etc, are a lot better than the american remakes. One of the things that put me off watching the originals are the subtitles, but I've changed my mind now. So anyway, the reason for this thread is for you guys to recommend some to me!
October 13, 200816 yr Goes without saying - REMAKES SUCK....... Except in very rare circumstances..... So, without further ado..... Ju On - The Grudge Ringu - The Ring Chakushin Ari - One Missed Call The Eye (Dir, Danny and Oxide Pang) - er, The Eye Into The Mirror - Mirrors Shutter - Shutter [Rec] - Quarantine Kairo - Pulse Infernal Affairs - The Departed (actually, this one's good 'cos Scorcese did it, and not some hack...) ---------------------------------------------------------------
October 13, 200816 yr I agree ... I want to see The Orphanage so badly, but the nearest place it was showing to me was Manchester (I'm in Leicester :|) I can only find versions without subtitles (and I don't speak one word of Spanish) online ... and fear that a $h!t American remake will be out before I find one, and I'll see that first and be completely let down. So if anyone knows where I can watch The Orphanage with subtitles, feel free to PM me :D
October 13, 200816 yr Author I downloaded Ringu but it doesnt have subtitles  I'm sure it said that it did when i started downloading it though

NOTE - that you'll probably have to change the .srt file name to the same title as the film file, so, for example if you have an avi file called "orphanage.avi", you have to make sure you change the name of the subtitle file to "orphanage.srt".... I download my films from a site called Mininova... There's an uploader called "axxo" who you can usually rely on to include subs with any of the foreign language films uploaded.... Hope this helps both you guys... :)

October 16, 200816 yr Remakes are usually terrible, but I dunno about 'The Ring' being bad...not as good as Ringu, but for me it was certainly still a good film in its own right. It was different enough that it wasn't just some ripoff, and it was done quite well.
October 16, 200816 yr OMFG. Shutter was HORRRIIIIBBBBLLLLLEEEEE. Me and my friend were laughing our f***ing asses off the entire film.
October 16, 200816 yr The remake of The Wicker Man was a complete joke. That film was epic on so many levels LOL e6i2WRreARo
October 17, 200816 yr i think it was called Super......super-something, i cant remember what the something was though   so if anyone knows which one i'm on about....link please :D I think what you're referring to is Sup-R Nova... That site actually got closed down over copyright infringement.... Sup-R Nova actually became 'Mininova'

October 18, 200816 yr That film was epic on so many levels LOL e6i2WRreARo LMFAO. WTF. I haven't even seen that movie and it made me LOL all over the damn place.
October 18, 200816 yr That film was epic on so many levels LOL e6i2WRreARo Definitely one of Nicholas Cage's 35 worst performances!! How does that man keep getting work?
October 18, 200816 yr Remakes are usually terrible, but I dunno about 'The Ring' being bad...not as good as Ringu, but for me it was certainly still a good film in its own right. It was different enough that it wasn't just some ripoff, and it was done quite well. Agreed, also The Grudge was well-made and very creepy. The worst you can say about it is that it's not really necessary since the original was of equal or greater quality. But it ranks (with The Ring) in the top 10 Hollywood horror films of the last decade.
October 18, 200816 yr Definitely one of Nicholas Cage's 35 worst performances!! How does that man keep getting work? Agreed... He truly is awful.... But, the thing is, he wasn't always this cr@p... His performances in "Wild At Heart", "Raising Arizona" and "Leaving Las Vegas" were all good IMO..... And, yeah, GAWD, the "Wicker Man" remake.....ROFLMAO........

So anyway, the reason for this thread is for you guys to recommend some to me! but the asian film industry can just be as bad as hollywood for churning out variatons on a theme and remaking things - just that in some cases we dont get the full amount of product thats being churned out as distb just get the decent stuff at film buyers expos.
October 19, 200816 yr but the asian film industry can just be as bad as hollywood for churning out variatons on a theme and remaking things Yeah, point taken... These endless variations on "Ghostly Asian bints with long, dark hair doing nasty stuff" is getting somewhat tiresome..... And, also, we tend to look upon the likes of Miike Takashi and Takeshi Kitano as being these "great visionary artists", well, that aint really how either of them are seen in Japan..... Kitano is almost a "light entertainer" in a Brucie/Des style, and Takashi is virtually a "gun for hire" in directorial terms, it just so happens that to us, his films appear totally barmy, extreme and out there because we dont really "get" Japanese culture.... Doesn't stop me from loving both of these guys' films, but you have to see them in a wider cultural context....
October 19, 200816 yr Yeah, point taken... These endless variations on "Ghostly Asian bints with long, dark hair doing nasty stuff" is getting somewhat tiresome..... tho maybe with the bankrupcy and demise of Tartan - the pages of DVD montly will be filled up with other stuff now (tho if turns out to be all Jason Statham dtv spin-offs that dont feature Jason Statham might not be a good thing  ) And, also, we tend to look upon the likes of Miike Takashi and Takeshi Kitano as being these "great visionary artists", well, that aint really how either of them are seen in Japan.....
