Britney Spears makes a 96-1 jump with "Womanizer," returning to the top of the list for the first time since her debut single ". . . Baby One More Time" hit No. 1 in January 1999 . . . This is the third time in the past two months that the record for the biggest jump to No. 1 has been shattered. On the Hot 100 dated Sept. 6, T.I. soared 71-1 with "Whatever You Like" and last week he broke his own record when he sprinted 80-1 with "Live Your Life." . . . Spears' massive leap to No. 1 is spurred by first-week digital download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003, besting Mariah Carey's take for "Touch My Body" by just over 200 units . . . In between her nearly 10-year gap between No. 1s, Spears has placed four other top 10s on the Hot 100, the last being "Gimme More," the first single from her last album, "Blackout." That song jumped 68-3 last October with first-week download sales of 179,000. "Womanizer" previews Spears' sixth studio set "Circus," due Dec. 2

Finally after nearly 10 years :D Its a shame that the digital era didnt come sooner. I'm sure songs like Oops and Toxic would've been #1s!

Another pop #1, really glad :D

Ooh wow, I didn't know she'd only had one other #1 over there. This is great news. :D

downloads have really changed the US chart for the better, there's been No.1's for Leona, Britney, Pink and Katy Perry this year and the urban songs making the top are usually the best of the genre now, whereas a few years ago there were some excruciating urban chart toppers making it due to ridiculous over-airplay

about 50% of the time this year, I've actually thought that the US chart looks better than the UK one, something I never thought I'd say!

shame downloads have had the opposite effect on the UK chart  hopefully it will speed up again soon, and pop seems to be making a major comeback, The Saturdays challenging for No.1 on iTunes being a huge shock...had the song come out in 2005 it would have flopped

Only her second number one? :o That's such a huge deal! 96-1 is bloody huge too :heehee:
Yeah its only her second #1. The reason is Britney struggles on airplay. During the early-mid 00s, sales were so low, that the Hot 100 was basically almost only airplay, and hence why Britney struggled to have hits. I dont need to tell you that there are loads of urban radio stations in the US, that being the reason why urban does so well on airplay, and why the Hot 100 seemed biased towards the genre.

OMMMMMFFFFFFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

totally agree with you :yahoo:

the US charts are becoming really interesting since the inclusion of downloads resulting in a faster and more varied chart , however download sales have harmed the UK chart which was a lot faster during the CD sales years and had become a lot slower now ....

Britney would never have gone to number 1 if it was 2002.

Thank God for the inclusion of download in the US charts...

Britney & Pop Rules!!!!!

Well done to her, she deserves it. Although, it may only be 1 week at the top.
I wish she would go away, back to the MH. She does my head in :puke2:

I'm just glad she got there! As long as she is still in the top 5 next week I will be happy...hoping for top 3 though :D
