This is the 32nd holiday season since Elvis went to trim that big Christmas tree in the sky, but he still has the most popular holiday album of all time. Elvis' Christmas Album, originally released in 1957, has sold more than 12 million copies.

Presley's album logged three weeks at #1 in December 1957, before surrendering the top spot to Bing Crosby's holiday perennial Merry Christmas. But Elvis returned to #1 the following week, in what seemed very much like a passing of the torch-or in this case, a Christmas candle. The Bing-to-Elvis hand-off represented a move from old to young, from Tin Pan Alley to rock'n'roll, from "White Christmas" to "Blue Christmas."

Christmas albums have been an integral part of the holidays for more than 60 years but there is no authoritative list of the most popular Christmas albums of all time. This list is based on a combination of Nielsen/SoundScan sales figures and RIAA.

Three of the top 20 holiday albums were released before 1960. Bing Crosby's 'Merry Christmas', the forerunner before renaming to 'White Christmas', was issued in 1945.

The original edition of this album, which spawned Presley's holiday perennial "Blue Christmas," topped the chart for four weeks and has sold 3,000,000 copies, according to the RIAA. It has sold 9,000,000 copies, per the RIAA. This grand total combines the two tallies.

With the snow falling around, at least in parts of the Northern hemisphere, EIN thought it opportune to remind fans of this interesting place to visit.

Now an Elvis-themed bar is probably more along the right lines. After all, The King was popular across the world. But this one is odd purely because of its location.

Memphis or Las Vegas would make sense, but the departure lounge of a minor Scottish airport?

But no, there it is, decked out in King paraphernalia and driving the poor bar staff crazy by playing a non-stop Best Of. Bemused passengers sit there, waiting for their flight and wondering what the hell is going on. That is unless they take the time to read the small notice which explains that Prestwick Airport was the only place in the UK that Presley set foot in. Nothing tenuous about that, huh?

Graceland Celebrates 70th Anniversary :cheer:

 

Graceland mansion, a National Historic Landmark, celebrates 70 years in 2009. The Colonial style mansion, built in 1939 by a prominent Memphis family, was later sold to Elvis Presley in 1957 for $102,000.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Graceland, a special exhibit will open on January 6, 2009, as part of the Graceland VIP Tour that will include documents, artifacts, videos and more about this historic home.

The Graceland 70th anniversary special exhibit will feature:

• The original architectural drawing of Graceland

• The deed to Graceland

• A signed check from Elvis and the canceled check for the down payment on the home

• Receipt for famous Graceland gates

• Receipt for lions at front steps

• Receipt for swimming pool

• Artist's rendering of mansion prior to construction

• Bills for redecorating fees from Golden's Interiors, who decorated the mansion when the Presley's moved into the home in 1957

• Videos of Virginia Grant, Priscilla Presley and others talking about Graceland

Tupelo Blues Marker For Elvis

 

Governor Haley Barbour today announced the placement of the latest Mississippi Blues Trail Marker honoring Tupelo’s blues legacy is perhaps most widely known — albeit in little detail — via its influence on a young Elvis Presley.

The Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division Heritage Trails Program, the Mississippi Blues Commission and the City of Tupelo will hold dedication ceremonies at 3 p.m. Thursday. The marker will be located at 399 East Main St. in Tupelo.

“The story behind the king of rock ’n’ roll begins with deep roots in the blues,” Gov. Haley Barbour said. “It was the sounds of gospel and country found in the blues music that helped to vault a native son of Tupelo into a worldwide music icon.”

As a boy, Presley lived adjacent to the African American neighborhoods of “Shake Rag” and “On the Hill.” Shake Rag, located east of the old M&O (later GM&O) railway tracks and extending northward from Main Street, was one of several historic African American communities in Tupelo.

By the 1920s blues and jazz flowed freely from performers at Shake Rag restaurants, cafes, and house parties, and later from jukeboxes, while the sounds of gospel music filled the churches. The neighborhood was leveled and its residents relocated during an urban renewal project initiated in the late 1960s.

Mississippi is well known as a destination for music lovers. Gov. Haley Barbour created the Mississippi Blues Trail to recognize the talents of the state’s countless musicians in the Birthplace of America’s Music. When completed more than 100 sites will offer an unforgettable journey into Blues history.

The trail marker ceremony will be part of a day of activities in Tupelo to honor the birthday of Elvis. Birthday refreshments and musical entertainment will be held at the Elvis Presley Birthplace beginning at 1:30 p.m. The day’s activities will culminate with a concert dedicated to Elvis.

Priscilla brings rescued horses to Graceland :cheer:

 

“Graceland is a living breathing home,” says Priscilla Presley, and she wants “to keep it the way Elvis left it,” including the barn and horses that were a part of life with Elvis.

 

One of the reasons she is in Memphis today for Elvis’ 74th birthday celebration is to introduce the world to two rescue horses adopted by Graceland. They live on the grounds where they were nursed back to health after living in life-threatening situations.

 

Presley says she intended to introduce a 3-year-old horse, Max, at last year’s birthday celebration, but the horse became ill during a 15-hour drive from Maine to Memphis. He missed the birthday while being cared for by a veterinarian.

 

“He was eating the bark off trees when we got him,” says Presley, who says the owner made the right decision by asking for help before Max and five other horses grew weaker.

 

The latest adoption is a 10 month-old quarter horse named Bandit, rescued last year from a Fayette County farm. Owner George Blackburn was convicted of neglecting Bandit and more than a dozen other horses.

 

“Unfortunately several didn’t make it,” said Presley, who says she is grateful to Fayette County Animal Rescue and the state for rescuing most of the horses.

 

Bandit has gained 56 pounds since arriving at Graceland, and she says he is one of four horses in the barn’s eight stalls.

 

Presley says riding horses was a favorite pastime at Graceland and led to the purchase of the 160 acre Circle G Ranch in Mississippi “to have the freedom to ride.”

 

The horses also add a touch of hominess to Graceland, which she says is important to the family. “When we come back, Lisa loves to get out on the golf cart with her children. It’s just great memories for us.” Presley says her favorite part of Graceland is “just walking through those doors. You feel his presence there. You sit down in the kitchen, and it’s as if time has stood still. You can feel the presence. Elvis’ spirit is certainly there.”

On Entertainment Tonigh Priscilla Presley announced new three new major exhibitions. Following the 70th Anniversary celebration kick-off, three new major exhibits will open this spring at Graceland:

• "Elvis in Hollywood" (charting the rock 'n' roll icon's rise on the big screen, featuring scripts and memorabilia);

• "Elvis Lives: The King and Pop Culture" (an interactive video presentation with music and trivia);

• New additions to the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum, including both of his Rolls Royce sedans, his 6-door Mercedes Benz limo, and the 16 ft ski boat he named after his mother.

Priscilla Presley has appeared on Larry King Live for what would have been Elvis' 74th birthday. Priscilla talks about the birthday celebrations, new exhibits; 'Elvis in Hollywood' and 'interactive' exhibits, also another that will display the deed to Graceland, the check written as deposit and much more; Priscilla shows these in the video you can watch above, Priscilla also talks about the death of Jett Travolta, Lisa Marie's twin daughters and the rescued horses that now live at Graceland. January 8, 2009 was the date for the celebrations to begin with the 70th Anniversary of Graceland, a National Historic Landmark, and the Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration - which promises new surprises this year. Following the kick off of celebration for the 70th Anniversary, three major other exhibits will open this spring: Elvis in Hollywood, Elvis Lives: the King and Pop Culture and new exhibits in the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum.

 

The following highlights are some of the details on the four different exhibits for the 2009 calendar:

 

• Graceland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration/VIP Tour Exhibit – open January 2009: The colonial style mansion was built in 1939 by a prominent Memphis family that later sold the historic home and surrounding 13 acres to Elvis Presley in 1957. The 70th Anniversary exhibit, included as part of the VIP Tour package, features the original architectural drawings of Graceland, a signed check from Elvis for the down payment ($102,000) on the home, the deed to Graceland and a video presentation that includes memories from those who lived there, including the first family to call Graceland home.

 

• Elvis in Hollywood – slated for March 2009: With 31 films to his name and box office smashes such as Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock, this new exhibit focuses on Elvis’ years in Tinsel Town and his success on the big screen. The exhibit tells the story of how Elvis transitioned from singer to on screen star and how he took Hollywood by storm to become its highest paid actor. Also part of the exhibit will be memorabilia from his career on the silver screen including his wardrobe (from Viva Las Vegas, Charro and Jailhouse Rock), personal scripts (featuring his own handwritten notes), rare behind the scenes photos, personal copies of his own feature films, original movie and a variety of other Elvis movie memorabilia.

 

• Elvis Lives: The King and Pop Culture – slated for March 2009: This interactive exhibit showcases Elvis in action as he entertains crowds in a stunning video presentation. Visitors can also retrace Elvis’ impact on pop culture by taking a trip down an Elvis time line, test their knowledge at an Elvis trivia kiosk and explore Elvis’ music through listening stations that features classics from the King of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Also included is a display of Elvis collectibles from the 50s to some of today’s must have memorabilia.

 

• Elvis Presley Automobile Museum – slated for March 2009: This Graceland exhibit celebrates new additions with a special display featuring both of Elvis' Rolls Royce sedans and his 6-door Mercedes Benz limousine featured in the movie Elvis on Tour.

As you probably know, Elvis Week 09 focuses on Elvis's triumphant return to live performances, 40 years ago. Needless to say that both logos were inspired by the sensational August '69 shows in Vegas. One of the eyecatchers of Elvis Week 2009 is the live show with Elvis's original musicians.

Located in Sincerely Elvis, see memorabilia from his film career, including his wardrobe, personal scripts, rare behind-the-scenes photos, personal copies of his own feature films and more.

 

2 New Additions for Elvis Car Museum

 

Check out new additions to the Elvis Car Museum with a special display featuring both of Elvis' Rolls Royce sedans and his 6-door Mercedes Benz limousine featured in the movie Elvis on Tour. (see picture)

 

3. Elvis Lives: The King and Pop Culture Exhibit

 

This interactive exhibit allows you to experience how Elvis has influenced pop culture as we know it today. Through video, photos and special displays, you will be able to trace Elvis’ impact on music and the world, explore Elvis’ music through listening stations and more.
