ICING THE BUCK

October 21st, 2008

AC/DC hit Wal-Mart stores yesterday and are reportedly blowing the doors off of the retail giant. We are told that sales for the exclusive Black Ice release are out-pacing the Eagles' first week, which was also a Wal-Mart exclusive. Estimates for first week are currently ranging north of 800k, which would make it the biggest Sony BMG release in the past two years, besting Alicia Keyes' 742k mark set last November. It would also make it the largest rock release from any label over the last two years, beating the 721k sold by Coldplay last June. Will it have enough steam to catch Lil Wayne’s one-million debut march?

AC/DC WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION

AC/DC’s Black Ice is scoring huge sales figures around the world. In Germany, the album is trending #1, with a shot at 250k. In the U.K., they are on track for 120-140k and headed for #1. They are also scoring record numbers, and will go #1 in Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Norway and Portugal.

AC/DC Eyeing Lil Wayne with Sales

“North of 800k,” for Wal-Mart Exclusive,

High School Musical 3 #2

October 22, 2008

All eyes are on Wal-Mart this week, as the retailer’s exclusive roll-out of AC/DC’s Columbia album Black Ice, dominates the sales landscape.

Label chief (and former band manager) Steve Barnett’s strategy, with the help of the ubiquitous Irving Azoff, appears to be paying dividends, as the disc is now on target to sell “well north of 800k,” based on first and second-day sales reports.

Some are even saying it could approach seven figures, threatening Lil Wayne’s up-to-now year-best, but it’s still too early for that. Needless to say, the veteran Aussie rockers will shake the marketplace all week long, with Wal-Mart having bought 2.5 million copies one-way and moving them like Ecstasy at a rave.

Disney’s High School Musical 3, the soundtrack to the theatrical feature opening this Friday, is on target for between 250-300k, with the wild card the movie itself, making it a lock for #2.

The regular edition of Kenny Chesney’s BNA/SBMG Nashville album Lucky Old Sun hits the street, with combined sales in the 100k area, give or take, after its turn at #1 this week.

Columbia’s Mary Mary, the other major chart newcomer, looks to be in the 40-50k range, with Christian bookstore sales possibly boosting that total higher.

AC/DC's 'Ice' Red Hot At Retail

October 22, 2008 , 2:45 PM ET

AC/DC's "Black Ice" is flying off the shelves at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, the exclusive U.S. retailers for the album that arrived yesterday (Oct. 21). Sources estimate the set sold 193,000 copies in its first day of sale, and could move upward of 800,000 in its first week.

This week, Wal-Mart set up "pop-up" stores in New York and Los Angeles to sell the album and offer fans the chance to play the AC/DC-branded version of the video game "Rock Band."

At regular Wal-Mart outlets, AC/DC has its own store-within-the-store, featuring the band's back catalog and merchandise.

"Black Ice" (Columbia) is AC/DC's first new studio album in eight years. The group begins an extensive world tour Oct. 28 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
