Maybe this can be removed later but I thought I'd better pass it on now.

Please Be Extremely Careful especially if using internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOLand so on.

This information arrived this morning direct from bothMicrosoft and Norton.

Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet.

You may receive an apparently harmless email with a Power Point presentation 'Life is beautiful.'

If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES , and delete it immediately .

If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.

AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the antivirus software's are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner.'

PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS EMAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS and ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY

Oh well, I'd much rather post a warning about a hoax than let it go by and it not be a hoax. If I didn't get things wrong, no one would believe it was me.

Please post any other warning you receive, Meg, .......the next one could be genuine. The current scam (not

on the internet) is for a card to be put through the door, informing you that a parcel is waiting to be delivered

to you, and instructing you to ring the number provided. If you do phone, it will cost you £15. This appears to

be a genuine scam as warning notices have been put up in local schools. The phone number is a premium one.

I've just clicked ona google alert. It may have nothing to do with it but I instantly got warnings of malicious files on my pc. The messages seemed to come from microsoft but I didn't recognise the address. I then got told which files were malicios and asked if I wanted to delete them. I was then sent a program to download a file which would deal with the. I've deleted that as well. My pc is running a scan but, I have no idea if they were a genuine warning or a threat.

I'll now have nightmares for the next few weeks - or I may just discover I'm living in a nightmare and shouldn't have deleted the downloads.

you probably did right.

I hate these things

Once in Florida I downloaded what I thought was a microsoft up-grade, it asked me to do something and I did......wiped everything

I'm now very careful

If I'd recognised the address, I may have gone ahead as it looked right. My AVG says it found two threats and got rid of them.

My computer wants to upload Service Pack 3. I began to let it, but then it said I have to back up my system or I might lose things,

I cancelled the procedure. I don't know what my system is, let alone how to back it up.

That's the trouble - sometimes the new things aren't compatible with the existing.

Bramley - the system is your operating system eg. Windows XP or Vista. You need to do a back up of your hard drive. You should do this regularly anyway so that you don't lose important stuff such as Darius photos, music etc etc if something were to go wrong with your computer. I'm guilty of not doing it often enough.

The service pack updates often include security enhancements as well as stability and performance improvements - in theory it should crash less.

You can back up your system by going to start/programs/accessories/system tools/backup (you may need to install the back up program first) but remember you need plenty of dvds or cds or flash drives to back up onto.

Here are some instructions:

Thanks Nina, for the help and explanations. Don't know what I'd do without you.

I never cease to be amazed at how so many people (including youngsters) can quite glibly manage the technical side of computing.

Hubby can't even operate the video or DVD machines yet..........doubt he ever will while I'm here to do it.

Am now settling down to attempt to understand the instructions. And I considered myself fairly intelligent ? Phew !!!!!!!!

My hubby is a techno-phobe. He doesn't even own a mobile phone and panics if the computer does something unexpected like pop up with a message. He can just about manage to surf the net and send an email but that's it. I'm the one who wires up dvd players, video, tv.

Are all men like that, I wonder? It may be because we're there to do it for them.
Not all men are like that. I know a few (including my dad) who are experts on computers and I'm lucky that I know a computer whizz who can fix any problems that I can't.

I worked with a few - a;; single. It's just the people I meet, it always seems to be the woman that does.
I'm not a technophobe. However I'm not interested enough to get the very best out of anything I buy. That would take hard work. Maybe I should just buy the bottom of the range - cheap ones would provide all my needs.
