thats only your opinion.... NOT a definitive fact. in fact id go as far as to suggest pop was at its peak 98-02 ... (pop as in pop and not as popular music)

If you think that the pinnacle of pop was a time dominated by Boyzone, Westlife, B*Witched, Steps, S Club 7, Robbie and Geri Halliwell then you are welcome to it.

Lol exactly. I hate indie/rock, so 97-03 was my favourite period for music as that genre wasnt around. There are exceptions obviously, and you'll find them in my lists.

the point of this thread is to surely list our favourite songs from these years, not try to please other people by pretending I liked more respectable songs...I was 10 years old...therefore I remember the pop and dance songs

I can't imagine many of my friends were listening to Aphex Twin or Bjork at the time either

Not that I would listen to them these days either :P Just not my thing at all, and dont think it'll ever be. I like commercial pop/dance/rnb, and I dont apologize for it.

I have liked a few Bjork songs though... I do have my alternative moments :P

I'm not asking aynone to pretend! There are songs I liked from 79-80 (when I was 10) that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole now.

I was in my late 20s in 97-98 so of course my view will be different. And I did listen to Bjork and Aphex Twin.

unlike many people, I never seem to go off anything from my past...I seem to have no shame

I own over 500 CD singles, many which I bought when I was 10/11, and I wouldn't get rid of any of them, I still love them, even if they are cheesy

... but most of those acts havnt been mentioned... besides i was talking about 'pop' as a sub genre of pop... unpretencious manufactured, no brainers... no not MY taste at all, but it was highly popular in the late 90's.

there has ALWAYS been cheesy pop, ever since as possibly even INCLUDING the beatles!... i mean.. 'she loves you' makes mcfly look sophisticated!

like it or not.... and generally i dont, its there and people will like it.

i believe that theres good and bad in ALL genres/styles of music, and reluctantly wouldnt write off any genre or year (thats difficult) !

neither do i...but when i was 10 i was collecting tracks by the kinks! :P

And I own over 500 7" singles, some of which I may not ever play again but I wouldn't dream of getting them. I am just saying that people's tastes change and a lot of people wouldn't necessarily be listening to the stuff they were listening to when they were 10. (Although I do still listen to Kings of the Wild Frontier!)

And sorry Mushy - She Loves You makes McFly look like bad copycats.

Now if you had mentioned Yellow Submarine...

And I have never written off a genre and especially not a year. As I said before there will always be good new music around.

Just today I picked up CD singles of Your Woman and The Boy is Mine from a charity shop. Which are both from around this time.

Just like Xylem has his alternative moments, I have my pop moments but they were few and far between during 98-02.

fair play m8, but earlier on your rant was quite strong tbh :)

there you go , personal choice/opinion... dont like anything on that list m8, but if that gets you going then fair play!

you don't like The Verve, Radiohead, Bjork...?

Are you feeling ok, Rob? :o

Age is never an excuse for liking abysmal music.... I was buying the Stiff releases when I was 11..... Lene Lovich, Wreckless Eric etc.... as well as stuff by the Sex Pistols, PiL, Grace Jones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Kate Bush... my only 'guilty pleasure' was ABBA.... and I don't feel truly guilty about ABBA, anyway...

scott says the same thing...

but not everyone is the same, so some will like 'uncool' drivel whilst others have a different taste. tbh i dont think it matters as long as its in balance. imho theres room in everyones collection for some three minute no-brainers to suit ones certain mood, as it is to have something heavy.

Why shouldn't it be strong? Music is the most important thing in my life. (Besides my partner and my ferrets!)

If I didn't feel passionate about music then I wouldn't be on this forum in the first place.

I gave an honest opinion of the state of the music released in 1999 but because I stated something passionately then it's considered "strong".

Well I have obviously missed the point! :)

What were you implying?

earlier in the thread you came across pretty angry and unmovable.. abit like grimly , further down the tread you were more mellow and seemingly accomodating of other music.. that rant might have been slightly offensive to those here who like late 90's pop.

TBH that was mild compared to what I felt like back around 1999-2000. Those feelings do still rise in me from time to time and overcome the usually mild-mannered music freak called Grebo!

I just hate what I (yes it's my opinion) see as watered-down lowest common denominator music. And I feel that a lot of the music from that period was worthless chart pap. It's not always the case that periods are that bad - I think 1998-2001 was that bad because the main alternatives (Dance and Indie) seemed to have burnt out or co-opted by the mainstream so there really wasn't a viable alternative. I see this as a result of record company and manager control which has been negated to some extent by the rise of the mp3 and the subsequent democratisation of music (i.e. everything is available all of the time.)

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think we will ever have a period as poor as 1998-2001. Some genres will be dominant but there will always be something else.

I'm the same, I was obsessed with the likes of the Spice Girls, Steps, S Club 7 and B*Witched and I still listen to the Spice Girls a lot now and occasionally the others. If only I had the sense to collect CDs, I have a box of about 50 cassettes and nothing to play them on.

At 18 I feel I should have outgrown the music I was into when I was 6-10 but on the whole I haven't. I think that, largely, the music you listen to as you grow up is quite influential to what you will like as you are older. I'm sure if I grew up listening to the likes of Radiohead, The Verve and Oasis I'd be more into that sort of music now. But, as it is, I listened to female-orientated commercial pop/R&B and that's what I still like now - I'm just slightly more open to other music.

As for the actual point of this thread, I think everything that would be on my list has been mentioned already. Mine would be:

01. Spice Girls - Too Much

02. Janet Jackson - Together Again

03. Mariah Carey - Butterfly

04. No Doubt - Don't Speak

05. The Cardigans - Lovefool

06. Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One

07. En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)

08. All Saints - Never Ever

09. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

10. Texas - Say What You Want

11. Gabrielle - Walk On By

12. Dannii Minogue - All I Wanna Do

That was quite difficult to stick to one song per artist, 1997 really is a bit too early for me as I didn't know of much music beyond the Spice Girls at that stage unless it was something my parents listened to. Of course, now I'm older, I can name a bit more but most of my list are still major hits that were unavoidable.
