Posted October 29, 200816 yr rock n roll revivalists?... decent good time pop or genre desicrating acts ? in the mid 70's the first rock n roll revival was in full swing. the first track i believe was moves 'california man' in 72, good track! but this caused a split within the move and roy wood left to form wizzard whilst jeff lynne formed elo with other ex move members. 'ball park incident' was wizzards first hit in late 72, followed by the big number one 'see my baby jive' in spring 73. this seems to have spawned a whole host of rock n roll revivalists, dressed in 'glammed up' teddy boy outfits, groups like mud, rubettes, showaddywaddy had a string of hits throughout the mid 70's long after roy woods wizzard declined. (after their xmas hit in 73, they seemed to lose direction and faded). this new breed of rock n rollers were hated by original teddyboys, who regarded this caberet style of their original music as sacrilidge. with the advent of punk in 77, groups like showaddywaddy and mud soon lost fans and faded. racey in 78 tried to carry it on but it wasnt until a year or so later that 'rockabilly' made a comeback. groups like matchbox and stray cats flew the flag into the early 80's. what was your fav rock n roll revival acts/tracks?.. do you think it was harmless pop fun? or a desecration of a much more genuine musical style?
October 29, 200816 yr Hmmm, obviously before my time. However, I like a lot of ELO/Wizzard stuff. Never appreciated Showaddywaddy or Shaky - although You Drive Me Crazy is actually not a bad pop song. I also really like Racey - Lay Your Love On Me for some reason. :P
October 29, 200816 yr Maybe the tail end of the 70s...the great rock n roll revival sounds of The Milkshakes.
October 30, 200816 yr Author i quite liked early mud, pre - 'tiger feet' as it was after that that they went rock n roll. 'hypnosis' and 'crazy' were decent pop tracks. my fav rock n roll revival track was probably '(do) the hucklebuck' the very silly track from 81 by coast to coast.
October 30, 200816 yr Liked early Mud & Wizard. Wasn't keen on the early '80's one, Shakey,Matchbox,Stray Cats,Darts.
