Celine Dion's heart will go on without us.

The French Canadian songstress has postponed her Thursday night show at the Target Center and booked a Feb. 5 make-up date.

According to a press release, Dion has been battling a respiratory virus and her doctor has insisted she take a temporary break from singing in order to recover completely. She performed two nights in Winnipeg earlier this week and left the stage after the second show "weak and breathless."

Ticketholders unable to attend the Feb. 5 performance can get a refund at the point of purchase.

MINNEAPOLIS SHOW POSTPONED

October 29 , 2008

AEG Live just announced Celine Dion has been forced to postpone her show scheduled for this Thursday, October 30 at Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Celine, who has been battling a respiratory virus for the past week, performed the second of two consecutive shows in Winnipeg last night, but left the stage weak and breathless. Her doctor stated that despite antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, bronchodilators and mucolytic agents prescribed for her condition, she has continued to worsen and he insists that she refrain from singing for the next five days, in order for her to recover completely.

Celine's next show on her Taking Chances World Tour, next Tuesday, November 4th at the United Center in Chicago, will go ahead as scheduled.

Celine Dion's Minneapolis concert will be rescheduled for Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Target Center. All tickets purchased for the October 30th concert will be honored on the new date.

For fans that are unable to attend the rescheduled date of February 5, a refund will be available at original point of purchase.

Say what you will about Celine Dion, but her Thursday-night gig at the Target Center was never, ever — not for even one second — boring.

Performing on an in-the-round stage, surrounded by about 16,500 reverent fans, Celine — who by this point has earned one-name-only status — turned in an eye-poppingly, jaw-droppingly extravagant show. On technological terms alone, it bested anything the Twin Cities have seen in years, even from razzle-dazzle masters like Kenny Chesney and U2.

Of course, a mere mortal might get lost among the hydraulic platforms, video cubes, moving sidewalks and fleet of backup dancers. But Celine came across like a singing, dancing, gesticulating machine, descended from another planet that existed solely to create Celine Dion before imploding into ashes. (Actually, she's from Quebec, but I digress.)

Part Zeus, part Eva Peron, Celine exuded the sort of otherworldly confidence that comes hand-in-hand with an earth-shattering ego. Yet there was an endearingly weird and chummy aura about everything she did, a certain innocence that made it easy to, gulp, almost fall in love with her. Even when she was banging her chest and clenching her fists and mugging more than 1,000 Jerry Lewises headlining 1,000 telethons.

She even dared to occasionally veer off script, a rare move among divas who travel in her stratosphere. That included an extended apology for postponing her show back in October, when she was suffering from arespiratory virus. Later, she broke into an impromptu, a cappella "Purple Rain" and joked about having Prince's phone number (she doesn't) and meeting the Purple One in person (she has).

Oh, and she sang, too, fitting in most of her big hits, including "The Power of Love," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," show opener "I Drove All Night" and a final encore of, what else, the "Titanic" theme song "My Heart Will Go On." All the while, she trotted out an ever-escalating series of sparkly, sometimes provocative outfits that included a billowing 10-foot cape and a pair of black bell-bottoms enhanced with what appeared to be a bejeweled thong.

And, again, say what you will about this woman, but after watching her for 105 minutes, it was obvious she doesn't phone it in, even 11 months into her tour, or for that matter, more than 25 years into her career. Take her cover of Heart's "Alone," a fairly routine, if widescreen, love song that Celine could knock out of the park over her morning coffee. But she sang every word like it could be her last, and often seemed to really, truly get lost in the music she was singing.

It was entirely possible to leave the show hating Celine's music. But I doubt even one soul left without a newfound love for Celine the performer.
