Posted October 30, 200816 yr Let's start with the obvious ten: Bananarama - Venus (#1 in America, only top ten UK) Bananarama - I Heard A Rumour (#4 in America, #14 UK) M.I.A. - Paper Planes Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten (Miles bigger in America!) George Michael - Father Figure George Michael - One More Try George Michael - Monkey George Michael - Kissing A Fool George Michael - Praying For Time George Michael - Freedom '90 I think we get the pattern here: George Michael was far more bigger in America during the '80s than he was in his home country. Edited October 30, 200816 yr by Dulce et Decorum
October 30, 200816 yr Is this based on sales or chart positions? Because a lot of British cross-over artists did better in the US than UK if you base it on sales!
October 30, 200816 yr Author Is this based on sales or chart positions? Because a lot of British cross-over artists did better in the US than UK if you base it on sales! Chart positions definitely. George Michael was able to release anything from Faith & still managed to hit #1 with Monkey, a notable UK flop!
October 30, 200816 yr Jesus Jones 'Right Here Right Now' topped the charts in the USA but only made the Top 30 in the UK I believe.
October 30, 200816 yr Jesus Jones 'Right Here Right Now' topped the charts in the USA but only made the Top 30 in the UK I believe. Almost topped, peaked at no 2. Thou a few weeks prior to that EMF topped the charts with unbelievable which only peaked at no 3 in the UK. There are tons of examples here thou so the list will be huge. A few random ones: Samantha Fox: Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) (US no 3, UK no 31) Samantha Fox: I Wanna Have Some Fun (US no 8, UK 63)
October 30, 200816 yr Erm...M.I.A isnt a UK act? She's from Sri Lanka. She's based in the UK i think though. Like Natasha Bedingfield who was born from New Zealand, or did she have parents from New Zealand? Anyway both are british acts i reckon.

October 30, 200816 yr Oooh..seems you are right from my research. She was born in England with Sri Lankan parents. Veryy good :)
October 30, 200816 yr Author And I'm surprised how many of you forgot to mention that George Michael is actually Greek.
October 30, 200816 yr Natasha Bedingfield is from a New Zealandish Mother and Father. But there are not many FULLY English people who have done better..I see. Edited October 30, 200816 yr by robotking96

October 30, 200816 yr Is this based on sales or chart positions? Because a lot of British cross-over artists did better in the US than UK if you base it on sales! You can't compare UK sales to US sales because the US has a bigger market!
October 30, 200816 yr BBMAK the british boyband who played their own instruments...they were big in the u.s. and only had like 1 top ten over here i think. I remembeer reading that their album sold over 1 million in the u.s. but didnt even dent over here.
October 30, 200816 yr Escape Club - Wild Wild West was a US #1 by a UK act, however the band never had a chart hit in the UK!
October 30, 200816 yr oh yeah, BBMak were huge over there :o another one that springs to mind is Roll To Me by Del Amitri, surprised that didn't go top ten here... Days Go By by dance act Dirty Vegas was a top 15 hit in the US and initally made low top 40 here first but went top 20 the second time, still not beating its US peak though
October 30, 200816 yr Escape Club - Wild Wild West was a US #1 by a UK act, however the band never had a chart hit in the UK! In a similar mould and time period Boys Don't Cry - I Wanna Be A Cowboy (UK group, did nothing in the UK, #12 on the Hot 100 in 1986).
