Posted October 31, 200816 yr yeah lets go back to 'real' retro, when future punks were toddlers and the 90's were thought of as a space age time when robots would do our housework for us... lol.. LEMON PIPERS - GREEN TAMBORINE .... the first bubblegum hit of 68, a good ohw. DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK AND TICH - THE LEGEND OF XANADOU ... the complete pop song, gimmicky, melodic, an all round pop classic. THE MOVE - FIRE BRIGADE .... a superb uptempo track, the move at their best imho. OTIS READING - HARD TO HANDLE ... forget 'dock of the bay' this is what the real otis was all about, a soul classic. SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - DANCE TO THE MUSIC .. gotta be a very early 'dance' hit, funky, soulful, still sounds good today. KASTENETZ KATZ SINGING ORCHESTRAL CIRCUS - QUICK JOEY SMALL (RUN JOEY RUN) ... as mentioned earlier in retro, the bubblegum hit factory gathering all its stars and releasing this great track, strange thing is that this track killed off the kastenetz - katz bubblegum hit factory production line... LOVE AFFAIR - RAINBOW VALLEY ... manufactured? maybe, but the la product was a bloody GOOD one! and i for one rated every one of their releases very highly. love the melody and production. DONOVAN - HURDY GURDY MAN ... another one we have discussed, i rate this as his best track.. SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND - KITES ... another complete pop song, love the haunting sounds and 'jackie chan' (common name) singing the break in chinese STATUS QUO - PICTURES OF MATCHSTICK MEN ... their first hit and easily one of their best dispite it being rather basic, nice psychedelic guitars SMALL FACES - TIN SOLDIER ... chose this over 'lazy sunday' but both are superb , lazy sunday being cutting edge britpop long before oasis or blur etc were out of nappies! FOUR TOPS - IF I WERE A CARPENTER ... fantastic cover of a bobby darin track, motown at its best
November 1, 200816 yr SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND - KITES ... another complete pop song, love the haunting sounds and 'jackie chan' (common name) singing the break in chinese will have to find my 100 60s hits for that - not noticed that part - tho in all probability it could be the real jackie chan when he was younger as he had some big cantopop hits - tho isnt SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND from somewhere like portsmouth or plymouth and so i dont think jackie chan would have been hanging around then - not quite the peking opera school innit... tho at this point also remembering that ash - kung fu - is another great track!!!
