More best ofs... this one even containing those infamous "extra tracks and a tacky badge!"

The Smiths "Singles Box" will come in a clamshell card box containing the first ten UK-issued singles in their original picture sleeves. The projected 4th single - "Still Ill" (which was pressed as DJ promo "A" label singles, but ultimately got passed over and replaced by "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"), presented in it's original form, and the Dutch release of "The Headmaster Ritual" housed in it's black & white "cowboy" sleeve - the rarest commercially issued single. The box is completed with four contemporary badges and a poster featuring the single artworks. All singles utilise the original production masters from the period. A must have item, and limited to 7500 copies only.

and the Johnny Marr remastered 'The Sound of The Smiths' (which comes housed in possibly the ugliest sleeve I've seen from a band known for gorgeous artwork)

That is a dismal cover. In fact the box set cover isn't much better. In fact that is even worse. It's like someone at marketing thought "I know, The Smiths used old shots for covers. Let's use one that looks like an Old Spice out-take. That'll do!"

Is the back catalogue still owned by Warners? Whoever it is... twatts!

The sad thing is.... the covers were both designed and chosen by Morrissey himself...ahem...

The good news with the album is that Johnny Marr has remastered the lot.... and he' chuffed to bits with the new recordings which is fine by me.

Ye Gods! Is that really true? Hang on! Is this not Mozzer taking the p***, then?
Apparently the only thing that Morrissey had to do with this was giving the title of the compilation.

To be honest, I think it is... Why else choose deliberately ugly cover shots...? There's really probably very little Moz could do to stop the record companies release yet another compilation, Marr probably thought he should be involved in remastering as well...

'Tis strange though, because the images on the covers of "Smiths Best 1 & 2" and "Singles" were obviously chosen with care, whereas these just look totally thrown together and incredibly tacky (esp, that one for the singles box...UGH..).... It HAS to be Moz and Marr's little "joke"....

I have pre-ordered my boxset..

Yeah the cover image is rubbish but the thought of original covered 7"'s in mint condition is too good to miss.

I read Moz had chosen the cover art - but, after buying the Sound of.. today...nope, it wasn't him.

For the record, the remasters are an absolute waste of time - I really couldn't spot the differences Marr was gushing about at all. So yes, it is just another sad cash-in...surely everyone who wants these songs already has them anyway? Doesn't every self-respecting indie conoisseur have at least one Smiths album of Best Of anyway? And... if they don't well... a lifetime of listening to Keane albums must beckon.... :P

Grimly.... Morrissey and Marr apparently absolutely loathed the artwork for the Smiths Best 1 and 2... strange considering how Godawful the sleeve for Strangeways was.... The Smiths had some beautiful artwork - but by the end... yeuch - horrible.

I always loved the covers of Best 1 and 2. 2 in particular ;)

I love the Smiths, and between me and the other half, we've got pretty much everything already. I like the look of the box set, but I can't really see the point of replica vinyl. Am after the two disc version of the CD, but I think I'm going to have to wait til payday...

Morrissey hated the cover for 'The Very Best of the Smiths' too - couldn't understand why a picture of Charles Hawtrey had been used. Neither can I to be honest.

Still, at least there's now an easy Christmas gift for the fortysomething, strangely quiffed bloke in your life.

Strange.... I always liked those covers tbh.... They're hardly as naff as the ones that Moz and Marr have apparently chosen for these compilations.... They're both just bloody tacky and cheap as I see it.... I didn't mind Charles Hawtrey half as much as "dodgy 70s Old Spice geezer standing beside his MOTAHHHHHHH"...

So you'd be not one for any Rhino issued box set called the best of Blanco y Negro Records then   ...even with a 24 page essay by Geoff Travis?!?!?

Well i would say that using a picture of Charles Hawtrey would be so like totally obv that Wes Butters could write a whole chapter about it (tho it would have been funny if Rhino had accidentally put a picture of Wes on the cover instead - tho not posing in Kenneth Williams pants   ).

The box set looks like it should be by someone like St Etienne or Mockingbird Wish Me Luck rather than the smiths...

Rhino just trade off the name they made for themselves in the 80s and 90s when they were a nice niche label before the inevitable buy out by a big label, Warners.

Twatts.

How Soon Is Now is one of my favourite tracks of all time, just watching the video its surprising how relevant it is now as it was 20 years ago..

on the other hand i think Rough Trade's Geoff Travis other label Blanco y Negro Records was always funded by warners in the first place...a bit like Creation/Elevation....

I don't understand why you have brought Blanco Y Negro into this.

The Smiths were on Geoff Travis's Rough Trade Records in the UK (however fyi they were signed to Seymour Stein's Sire Records in the USA - part of Warners...so think its very justified that Warners own the Smiths back cat)
