November 16, 200816 yr Sadly no room for Whigfield, Doop, Shampoo, Pato Banton or CJ Lewis in this list. Come to think of it they would not make my top one million songs of 1994. A fantastic year for music, even if it was a very poor one for pop music IMHO: Top 20 (One song per act): 1. Oasis - Live Forever - The best song Noel Gallagher will ever write. [ Totally with you on that one Rich... If I'd gone on and done 20 like you did, I reckon that absolute Pop GEM would've found a place there... Probably Beck. Mazzy Star, Bomb The Bass and Pulp would too.... Shampoo's "Trouble" I can tolerate far more than Whigfield, at least it was a bit ballsy and had some attitude about it, and they were using the whole "girl power" thing a few years before Simon Fuller/Spice Girls took it up...
November 16, 200816 yr When I was six years old, I was dancing at Christmas parties to "The Birdie Song" with my mum and grannie (which I mention as a take-up on Grebo's point about people's musical tastes totally regressing TO that of a bloomin' 6-year old everytime Christmas comes round... ), er, so I should include that in a "Best Of...." should I...??? ROFLMAO.... Gimme a break, "Saturday Night" is TOTALLY on that level of puerile, along with "Crazy Frog" and "Bob The Builder".... Even IF something is nostalgia and fun at that particular time, we should be able to remember the fun times, but still think, "bloody hell, THE BIRDIE SONG??? WTF??????". "Saturday Night" - file under Sh"tty Novelty Record and forget and move on.... Think youre getting mixed up with that cashin cover - Black Duck's Whiggle In Line.... I just dont get you sometimes man, there you are tearing strips off people who rate PWL stuff and then defend THIS sort of garbage on the same sort of dubious grounds that defenders of PWL do, they would say about "I Should Be So Lucky" more or less EXACTLY the same argument you use to defend "Saturday Night"... Whigfield is the same level of sh!t (if not worse..) than Kylie, Jason, Rick, Sonia..... No Whigfield was great europop - tho Think Of You was her best record - still sounds brilliant today (we will pass on her Mumgo Jerry, ahem, cover   ) esp if played back to back with Ann Lee, Duece or Outhere Brothers... however talking of PWL (I think tho i'm not sure if it is - tho its on the dvd with other 80s tracks by Divine, SAW's Roadblock and West End/Sybil) just found Sabrina on an 80s DVDs singing All Of Me in a heavily Italian accent and thinking that not only was that good Hi-NRG europop (tho obv a bit dated - her hair makes her look like Jane McDonald's sister rather than say like a sexier Imbruglia sister) and maybe it was a pity that Sabrina didnt make loads and loads of other UK hits singles as she may have been preferble to the continuing existance of Dannii Minogue (who looking at her photos in the paper yesterday seems to have scarlier become more and more facially redesigned to looking more and more like Kylie as she went on - she didnt really look much like dannii does now when she was supposed to be a punk in home and away - well from the picture she doesnt look that punk - tho this might be what punks in 1980s australia look like) as for nirvana..... i dont like them... i dont like grunge oh....that Nirvana   ...though I think you'll probs love the original Nirvana being all 60s (and I'll think i'll have a bet on Ben and Jerry doing a Kurt Cobain flavor to go with their Cherry Garcia one day....as thats the kind of big busines that would co-op another big business like the estate of Cobain - tho a flvour with the tru taste of Pearl Jam might be more in keeping with the relix jamband massives....)

As for "Love Is All Around" - Wet Wet Wet - file under - "God, What WERE People Thinking"..... (same category as Bryan Adams....) I just dont get you sometimes man, there you are tearing strips off people who rate PWL stuff and then defend THIS sort of garbage on the same sort of dubious grounds that defenders of PWL do, they would say about "I Should Be So Lucky" more or less EXACTLY the same argument you use to defend "Saturday Night"... Whigfield is the same level of sh!t (if not worse..) than Kylie, Jason, Rick, Sonia..... you still dont UNDERSTAND do you?... i WASNT 6 when 'saturday night' was out so theres no comparison.. and yet again you are lecturing me over a point ive already AGREED with you!... saturday night IS p*** poor pop... but to me IT HAS NOSTALGIA VALUE, comprande? you CANNOT tell me i havnt, you CANT TELL me im wrong... its THERE it EXISTS, so get of your high horse and accept that sometimes records CAN be liked for nostalgia value ALONE. gawd music supposed to be an all encompasing vehicle for pleasure at EVERY level. to deny nostalgia as a vallied reason to enjoy music makes you missing out and narrow minded :P as for saw..... ive ALWAYS said that there is good and bad in ALL musical styles, even watertwat has done some good tracks... ive always said that there IS room for an occassional three minute no brainer in everyones collection... my objection to saw is the way they swamped the charts with c**p.. and people who have a predominantly 'three minute no brainer' collection is what i worry about. its all about percentages...
November 17, 200816 yr you still dont UNDERSTAND do you?... i WASNT 6 when 'saturday night' was out so theres no comparison.. I do understand, I just totally disagree with you, a sh!t record is a sh!t record. I absolutely cringe when I think of some of the stuff I used to listen to 15/20 years ago (Stone Temple Pilots???? GAWD Helmet???? SHEEEEEEESHHH... ), doesn't mean I still dont acknowledge the fun I had.... The fact that you weren't a 6-year old just means you have no excuse.... And it's totally in with Grebo's point about temporary taste bypasses at certain places and times of the year....

The fact that you weren't a 6-year old just means you have no excuse.... And it's totally in with Grebo's point about temporary taste bypasses at certain places and times of the year.... well i think you are wrong... simple as, if i or anyone can get pleasure (in some form) out of any music then music is fulfilling its purpose.. and my head aint so far up my arse that i cant appreciate that music is a multi-faceted media that can deliver its purpose in a variety of ways.. you CANNOT tell me im wrong, you aint the boss of me! you arnt my consciousness, you aint my god, you do not dictate to me what i am allowed to like and what not! gawd... lol everytime i heard saturday night, i remember the good times i had on holiday... simple as, that is NOT wrong.
November 17, 200816 yr everytime i heard saturday night, i remember the good times i had on holiday... simple as, that is NOT wrong. But I still dont really see how that translates into giving it some kind of Retrospective rate in a "Best of..." chart or whatever.... When making up these sorts of charts, the actual musical worth has to take precedence more than whatever happy memories, whether childhood or on holiday, may be associated... Which is why I aint gonna put in any "Muppets" songs for the 1978 chart either....LOL....And I would actually rate the average silly Muppets ditty higher on the musical worthiness scale than Whiggy.... :P
November 17, 200816 yr you CANNOT tell me im wrong, you aint the boss of me! you arnt my consciousness, you aint my god, you do not dictate to me what i am allowed to like and what not! gawd... lol As The Bard no doubt would have said... "Methinks the laddie doth protest too much...."  :P

November 17, 200816 yr but im not, im tone deaf! You must be if you like Saturday Night! It's just a joke ok?

Oasis - Live Forever - The best song Noel Gallagher will ever write. 2. Jeff Buckley - Grace - The title track of probably the most influential album in music of the past 15 years. 3. Suede - Stay Together - The stand alone epic single written between debut and second albums. 4. Morrissey - The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get - Stephen was at his lyrical best with this Steve Lillywhite produced gem. 5. The Beastie Boys - Sabotage - A fantastic edgy track with a brilliant cop video to match. 6. Blur - This Is A Low - The epic stand out closing track from their career defining Parklife album. 7. Mazzy Star - Fade Into You - A country tinged Generation X attempt at recreating the vibe of Velvet Underground & Nico. 9eptj2EZ4xE 8. Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) - Just pips Voodoo People as the best track they made this year. 9. Bomb The Bass - Bug Powder Dust - Musically Tim Simenon predated the sound of Fatboy Slim by the best part of half a decade with this track that really should have been a Top 3 smash hit. ncHsp1Sn5-M 10. Beck - Loser - To think back then he looked like he could be filed with Radiohead as a one hit wonder. 11. Portishead - Sour Times - This very cinematic trip hop track complimented by Beth Gibbons melodramatic vocals "Nobody loves me, it's true ...." 12. Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World - A heartfelt beautiful attempt at the David Bowie classic. 13. Manic Street Preachers - Faster - Taken from their career highpoint/commercial low point the nihilistic The Holy Bible album this track lyrically & musically takes no prisoners. jeYbB_xC3fk 14. Pulp - Do You Remember The First Time - A fantastic song about losing your virginity that saw Jarvis Cocker & co reach the Top 40 for the first time. 15. Electrafixion - Zephyr - The fantastic distorted echo rocking debut single by Ian McCulloch & Will Sergeant out of Echo & The Bunnymen produced by Youth. R7pzSp8BXFM 16. Supergrass - Caught By The Fuzz - This was their debut PowerPop inspired single all about getting into trouble with the Law. 17. Stone Roses - Love Spreads - This Led Zep inspired track was the best thing about a very disappointing Second Coming album. 18. Stereolab - Ping Pong - A marvellous track that "Saint" John Peel played a lot on his Radio 1 show. 19. Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl - A great bonkers lead single from a rather disappointing album Under The Pink. 20. Jesus & Mary Chain ft Hope Sandoval - Sometimes Always - A superb attempt at writing and recording a Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra style track with the lead vocalist of Mazzy Star. such a GREAT list!

November 18, 200816 yr from a personal perspective a nostalgic track does take precidence over a track with more 'musical worth' IF i dont like it as much!. im not a musician, i know and accept that musicians can appreciate a technically good composition because of its 'worthiness', but im not, im tone deaf! Yeah, okay, fair 'nuff..... I guess because I've played bass in a few local bands over the years my own perspective is a bit more 'muso', and that I have more respect for the whole "four lads or lasses in a transit van" ethos.... :)
November 18, 200816 yr Yeah, okay, fair 'nuff..... I guess because I've played bass in a few local bands over the years my own perspective is a bit more 'muso', and that I have more respect for the whole "four lads or lasses in a transit van" ethos.... :) oh i have utter respect for 'four lads in a transit', but , ultimately if they have failed to produce a song that hits me in the right spot... then ill not like them! any track i hear from anybody HAS to hit me right, it has to evoke something in me, im not bothered who or what the track is but if it stimulates summut in my brain then its a 'hit' ...lol. but ill not like a track merely because its technically sound, ill respect it, but not like it on a personal level.
