MOUNTING EXCITEMENT was the only other top 30 VA Comp in. MONTY PYPHON`S FLYING CIRCUS was also another TV Cast album, as well as NOT THE 9 O`CLOCK NEWS. STEVIE WONDER was the champion of the week..and many a hit single came from the album. BARBRA STRIESAND waited at 2, for 9 weeks..not matching the single chart topper "WOMAN IN LOVE". THE POLICE had both te biggest album, and single in 1980. THREE DEGREES provided the GOLD album, as we awaited ABBA`s "SUPER TROUPER" album. MOTORHEAD were doing good both album, and single. OMD had their first year of chart success. EARTH WIND AND FIRE were on the go with the album, but still waited the singles chart comeback for 1981. BARRY MANILOW was sandwiched between rock greats SPRINGSTEEN, STATUS QUO, WHITESNAKE, and BOWIE! The top singles in Nov 1980: 01 01 WOMAN IN LOVE - BARBRA STRIESAND 02 13 TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE 03 03 SPECIAL BREW - BAD MANNERS 04 02 WHAT YOU`RE PROPOSING - STATUS QUO 05 05 DOG EAT DOG - ADAM AND THE ANTS 06 08 FASHION - DAVID BOWIE 07 06 ENOLA GAY - OMD 08 26 I COULD BE SO GOOD FOR YOU - DENNIS WATERMAN/GERARD KENNY 09 04 WHEN YOU ASK ABOUT LOVE - MATCHBOX 10 09 IF YOU`RE LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT - ODYSSEY 11 22 NEVER KNEW LOVE LIKE THIS - STEPHANIE MILLS 12 16 SUDDENLY - OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN/CLIFF RICHARD 13 30 SAME OLD SCENE - ROXY MUSIC 14 14 ONE MAN WOMAN - SHEENA EASTON 15 31 STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON 16 11 ALL OUT OF LOVE - AIR SUPPLY 17 28 ACE OF SPADES - MOTORHEAD 18 23 EARTH DIES SCREAMING/DREAM A LIE - UB40 19 12 GOTTA PULL MYSELF TOGETHER - NOLANS 20 07 D.I.S.C.O - OTTAWAN 21 NE SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 22 37 PASSION - ROD STEWART 23 10 BAGGY TROUSERS - MADNESS 24 20 LOVING JUST FOR FUN - KELLY MARIE 25 32 CELEBRATION - KOOL AND THE GANG 26 17 ARMY DREAMERS - KATE BUSH 27 18 LOVE X LOVE - GEORGE BENSON 28 15 DON`T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME - THE POLICE 29 29 LOVELY ONE - JACKSONS 30 25 WHY DO LOVERS BREAK EACH OTHERS HEARTS - SHOWADDYWADDY 31 21 WHAT`S IN A KISS - GILBERT O`SULLIVAN 32 NE I LIKE WHAT YOU`RE DOING TO ME - YOUNG AND CO. 33 19 CASANOVA - COFFEE 34 NE THE NIGHT THE WINE AND THE ROSES - LIQUID GOLD 35 NE MILES AWAY - JOHN FOXX 36 NE BOURGIE BOURGIE - GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS 37 NE I`M COMING OUT - DIANA ROSS 38 24 AND THE BIRDS WERE SINGING - SWEET PEOPLE 39 27 YOU`RE LYING - LINX 40 NE WOMEN IN UNIFORM - IRON MAIDEN BARBRA STRIESAND ruling in 1980, for the final week. BLONDIE waiting. BAD MANNERS couldn`t move, but BUSTER BLOODVESSEL could! ADAM ANT striking a first top 5 hit. 12 Bars for the Quo. DAVID BOWIE was getting FASHION conscious. OMD with a first top tenner. DENNIS WATERMAN teaming up with GERARD KENNY and writing the theme to MINDER. Gerard also did a solo version of this, but I haven`t heard that since GLORIA HUNNIFORD played this in an interview in 1989. MATCHBOX had their only top ten single..the rock-a-billy group. STEPHANIE MILLS struck for her first, with an intro that sounded similar to a later MADONNA hit. ROXY MUSIC took another hit from the album "FLESH AND BLOOD". JOHN LENNON was smashing up the chart, for the comeback that destroyed him. AIR SUPPLY came from Australia. OTTAWAN got slightly cheesey. MOTORHEAD rocked again. UB40 were on quite early days with a double A. SHEENA EASTON was a ONE MAN WOMAN. ROD STEWART has a GH out next week, in 1980 he was still having PASSION. THE NOLANS were at their best..their best year. MADNESS were still doing great, another early year. KELLY MARIE couldn`t follow up her number one, that was meant for ELVIS. KATE BUSH should have done better. ABBA smashed in with another number one. GLADYS KNIGHT was side by side DIANA ROSS. SWEET PEOPLE gave us the latest bird songs from Belgium. IRON MAIDEN started out, as SIMON BATES introduced them on TOP OF THE POPS. THE JACKSONS had a forgotten hit, have a look at that while I add up the latest singles charts... http://youtube.com/watch?v=eNRnFYcdg7s
November 14, 200816 yr Hey Dave! Thanks for this. Sad to see Mamma Mia out of the top 10 films At least you've given us some amazing retros :) Bourgie Bourgie by Gladys Knight = amazing  IMHO The Nolans' best song is Attention To Me though. Quite edgy for them :) Edited November 14, 200816 yr by TomKay
November 14, 200816 yr Dave - in the 'Official' Charts of 1980, (by the BMRB), The Police did not have the No.1 Single & No.1 Album of the Year. 'Zenyatta Mondatta' was the No.1 Album of the Year until Mid December, & then 'Super Trouper' by ABBA overtook it. The 3rd time that ABBA had, had the Best Selling UK Album of the Year. ('Greatest Hits - 1976, 'Arrival' - 1977, & 'Super Trouper' - 1980). The BMRB put out '1980's Best Sellers' Charts in late December 1980, & they showed The Police Album as No.1 for the Year, & 'Super Trouper' - Album - in 4th place. But, it only counted Sales until the W/E 6th December. In January 1981 they put out 1980's Charts that included all of December, & the ABBA Album had risen to No.1 for 1980 - and The Police Album fell from 1st to 2nd place. (The 'Super Trouper' Single rose from 28th place for 1980, to 4th place). TomKay, 'Mamma Mia!' hasn't fallen far out of the Top 10 UK Films - only from No.9 to No.11. From tonight, (14th November), to Sunday 23rd November, you can see it on a 'Buy 1 Ticket Get 1 Free' basis, at UK Cinemas.
November 14, 200816 yr Author Thank`s Colin..all correct. Record Business (the forerunner to MRIB) did list the Police as top album, and single. Which like you say, was again an early December cut off point, for the end of year chart countdown on Independant Radio...which of course was pretty much cut off for the Tony Blackburn top 40 of 1980 broadcasted over on Radio One, on 4th Jan 1981. Independant Radio did their 1980 Year end chart across the 27th/28th December Weekend, though. Let`s go to the top singles, here in November 2008. Starting as ever Physically..This week nothing like the combined chart: 01 01 HERO 02 NE ALESHA DIXON 03 NE BEYONCE 04 02 GIRLS ALOUD 05 03 LEONA 06 04 GURU JOSH 07 NE LEMAR 08 05 KANYE 09 06 PINK 10 07 ALICIA/JACK 11 NE PUDSEYS DREAM/TARTAN ARMY 12 09 KARDINAL OFFISHALL 13 NE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK 14 NE SCRIPT - BREAK EVEN 15 14 SATURDAYS 16 12 MILEY 17 13 SASH 18 16 KINGS OF LEON 19 11 RAZORLIGHT 20 08 PAUL WELLER 21 10 GERALDINE 22 18 BOYZONE 23 NE TWISTED WHEEL - LUCY THE CASTLE 24 16 LEON 25 15 ADELE 26 19 PLATNUM 27 NE SIMPLY RED - GO NOW 28 20 DIDO 29 26 SUGABABES 30 NE CHARLATANS - OH VANITY 31 24 VIEW 32 25 GAME 33 27 SNOW PATROL 34 NE ENYA 35 29 FALL OUT BOY 36 28 PUSSYCAT DOLLS 37 31 WILL YOUNG 38 35 OASIS 39 21 FIGHTSTAR 40 30 SCOUTING FOR GIRLS That tells us that Alesha is more popular physically than Beyonce. Although Beyonce has the album out next week, I predict her singles will never make the number one again. CRAIG DAVID, TOM JONES, MARIAH CAREY has an early Christmas in the top 70. Spare a thought (or not) for New Kids On The Block...sorry boys in the top 75, you are flop of the week! Don`t forget Chart Show`s top 20 Saturday at 9am (Sky 365). Shall we end with the top pre-orders? There are also two Miracles released in the next 2 weeks: Tom Baxter, of course...and Medieval Babes. It is very likely to say that those 2 singles, both need a miracle! Here are the pre-order albums for Mon 17th: 01 NOW 71 02 DIDO - SAFE TRIP HOME 03 BEYONCE - I AM SASHA FIERCE 04 MINISTRY OF SOUND ANTHEMS 2 - VARIOUS 05 SPIRIT DELUXE EDITION - LEONA LEWIS 06 N-DUBZ - UNCLE B. 07 DARK HORSE - NICKELBACK 08 HED KANDI MIX 08 - VARIOUS 09 NEVER FORGET ULTIMATE COLLECTION - TAKE THAT 10 PAPER TRAIL - T.I. November 14, 200816 yr Thanks Dave. Great stuff as usual. Dissapointed Tom Jones' single isn't top 50 but hey. As for Mamma Mia thanks for the info, might see it again, as I loved the film and although I've pre-ordered the DVD, apparently it's just not as fun on the small screen. November 14, 200816 yr I'm delighted to see the truly awful New Kids On The Block have flopped so badly even with a physical single release and help from Ne-Yo. Doing an interview in Heat magazine and slagging off both Take That & Robbie Williams will surely go down as a contender for the stupidest PR act by a Pop act in 2008.
The article on Take That in last Sunday's Observer Music Monthly was a really good read. Everyone from Alex James to Mark Frith commented on how likeable and genuinely friendly Take That were the first time round - and is probably why they've had a lot of good-will to give them a jump start this time round - you know the old saying 'be nice to everyone on the way up because you may need them on the way down'. Say what you like about Nigel Martin-Smith ... he taught those boys well! However, Mark Frith's comment on NKOTB was that even back then ... they were just 'vile'. November 14, 200816 yr Author Eh? Wassis? Surely the world and his dog already have this? Norma You know Norma...I don`t know why it is actually listed in pre-orders. First I thought it was a mistake, and should be the new album, but apparently Never Forget will once again re-enter the top 40 albums.

November 14, 200816 yr Yep, I believe the film doesn`t feature "Lay All Your Love On Me" in it. Where as the Stage Productions do. Actually I think it's The Name Of The Game you're thinking of. LAYLOM (as we fans call it) is quite a big scene in the movie :)
November 14, 200816 yr Author I really hope that Queen Dido sells atleast over 150,000 copies next week! It`s very likely Karen. Now 71 will be taking 300,000 though!

November 14, 200816 yr Author I do reckon Pudsey Beautiful Dreamers might just scrape the top 40 come Sunday :heehee: You know Martin, I have not even heard the song at all. I know it is based on the Scottish World Cup Squad 1982 hit..but other than that! :teresa:
