In 1950s when musicals were very popular you used to get film stars having hit records all the time, usually songs from the films themselves. Like Doris Day, she had huge hits like Secret Love from Calimity Jane and Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera Sera) from The Man Who Knew Too Much, both films in which she played the main female character.

 

The charts didn't exist in this country before the 1950s, but Judy Garland had quite a few albums as well as being a film star. Often the songs were tied in with the films themselves with these examples though.
