December 1, 200816 yr Wow at this review! (and this man speaks about the songs, wipiiiiiii!) http://entertainment.uk.msn.com/music/feat...mentid=11477488 Exactly what I thought: either you love this album or you hate it
December 1, 200816 yr i never read reviews on albums because i make my own mind up. Alanis Morissette's latest album Flavors Of Entanglement got pretty mixed reviews but i think it is the best album of 2008. i am most likely to buy this album for my dad's xmas but i will end up borrowing it :heehee:
December 1, 200816 yr I can only give half a review as I'll have to listen to the rest of the album in the car on the way to work tomorrow: The Garden - I really like this - it is more Idle Race than Beatles (which I don't mind as I love Idle Race - pre-cursor to The Move & ELO). I was very wary of Mark's voice at the start of it ... a bit creepy ... but love it really picks up with Gary & Jason's vocal when they chip in. When it gets back to Mark - his voice is less scary. I'll have to give it a couple more listens - at the moment I'd give this track 6/10. Greatest Day - apart from there being no chorus (which I still want!) I appreciate what was in mind when they wrote it and will be very disappointed if they don't use this as the opening song for the concerts - it is a prelude 7/10 Hello - I'm sorry - I really don't like this - got half way through and skipped it. The guy who said it sounds a bit like 'When I'm Cleaning Windows' was right! 4/10 Said It All - my favourite so far - lovely combined vocal from Gary & Mark and at present I'm giving this 9/10. Will probably be 10/10 by the end of the week. Julie - Not made my mind up on this one yet. I don't like songs with people's names in ... the only one I like is Alison by Elvis Costello. Can't rate it as I skipped to The Circus. The Circus - I do like this - lovely vocal ... but its a Gary song - and the others don't get a look in. Rating it as a song - but not part of a TT album - 8/10. How Did It Come To This - will finish off this one tomorrow - started playing just as I'd pulled up outside my house - from the minute and a half I've heard so far I LOVE THIS SONG - Jason - you're a bit of a star! Will finish my review tomorrow. Norma
December 1, 200816 yr sounds like a good album your review convinced me to buy this for my dad's xmas, i wasn't so sure before
December 1, 200816 yr Wow, Norma...you give exactly the other songs the points as I will give :naughty: . I like Hello, not to keen on How did it come to this and i don't like The Circus at all. I agree only on Said it all - the pep comes really from the duo.
December 1, 200816 yr The Garden what i love about this is the mixture of voices and i love marks part its a song i feel i will adore in time 8/10 Greatest day for me is average and of anything it should only be an album track, still it netted them a number 1 so i cant give out too much 5/10 Hello im sorry i agree with you norma is a tad boring and forgetable 4/10 Said it all again great song i love the voice contrasts and a real grower 8/10
December 1, 200816 yr My review: The Garden: i love how this song shows the different personalities of TT and that each one has a voice. The change in rhythm for every voice (apart for Jason) is genial. I love the soft voice of Mark and the part of Howard comes really unexpected. This song shows also the tone of the album - a little bit more courageous and experimental . This song will be a pleasure for the die hard TT fans and less for the normal listeners, so i don't thing it will be a good choice for a single. Great opener and manifesto of the new album. 8/10 Greatest Day: this song pales compared to the rest of the album. 6/10 Hello: i love this song. It goes about the beginning of a love, so i feel like the drums are like the hearts beating and the enthusiasm of "discovering" someone , the whole adrenaline/hormones/whatever of the first dates is flowing through the whole song. It must have the most two kitsch lyrics from the whole album: "all the bells are ringing out, all the birds are singing out" - as genial bad as Chaplin's lyrics from This is my song. This song is really something that McCartney would sing. The extravagant orchestration is in accord with the them of the song. 9/10 Said it all: the beginning is fantastic, after that it gets a little bit boring. IMO the song is really saved from the contrast between the angelic voice of Gary and the passionate voice of Mark. 7/10 Julie: I have mixed feeling with this song. I have moment when I love it, moments when I don't care. When I like it, i see it very beatles-like. When I don't care it is perhaps because the orchestration is to much. Less would be soo much better. Average not caring/loving= 7/10 The circus: forgettable. Till the chorus i like it, but the chorus make it boring. I don't like mans who sings to much in falsetto and the whole chorus is falsetto. 3/10 How did it comes to this: somehow the chorus didn't get along with the rest. I just like it till the chorus, i love the lyrics. But it is a grower definitively. At the moment 6/10
December 1, 200816 yr Second part: Up all night: this song is one of the finest songs from TT. I will hate TT if this song won't be released as the second single. It becomes the awards for the best lyrics, probably the only song who comes near to the great lyrics from Mark's solo. A tad ironic, like a movie, scenes from life. The listener is let alone from these scenes to think what the feelings behind the words are (Pour another glass / While I watch the bottle disappear / While I watch the morning light appear / Thinking about you) . The lyrics from the duet with Jason are great, by far the best of the album : I met this girl last night and she said 'why won't you marry me?' Well, I'm too young for that, too dumb for that, too broke for that, too tired for that... But would you like to come back to my flat?" I love this kind of lyrics. The orchestration is exactly the measure it needs. For some songs I think they get enhanced in feeling thorough the massive orchestration behind. Not this one: everything is in the right place. A little bow to Simon and Garfunkel. 10/10 What is love: as much as I love Howard's voice, this song is kind of boring and predictable. The lyrics are nice. 5/10 You: a little bit more dramatic as The Circus. Typical Gary ballads, but also too much falsetto. 6/10 Hold up a light: at the beginning it got on my nerves. Now I love it! A kind of retro-disco-song which make me wish dance. Think at the best era of disco, end of 70'-beginning 80'. I have no idea why I think on Pet Shop Boys and at Queen when I hear this song - perhaps because I like these two acts for their extravagant pop-music. The orchestration is very dramatic, the chorus doesn't want to left my head. If i interpret the lyrics correct (I may be wrong) it goes in the special relationship TT- fan at the gigs. Mark likes very much when people hold lights at the BW tour - from here can come the "Hold up a light for me - i'll be watching". I have the feeling the lyrics can have double meaning, only that till now I didn't make my mind on the alternative interpretation. 10/10 Here: one of my fav songs. The beginning is slow, but from the 2:10 mark is absolutely wow! The harmonies and the end are so great! The most rock-folk and alternative from the album. The lyrics are also not bad. 10/10 She said: very ironic, tongue in cheek, very retro, very funny. I like it a lot and Gary voice is what i want to hear from him! Take this song not serious and you will like it. 9/10 A third part will come for the whole impression of the album, what i like and what not. Edited December 1, 200816 yr by IrisAlbastru
December 1, 200816 yr im in agreeance that the 2nd half of the album is stronger half and i totally think up all night should be the next single it would absolutly be a huge hit and huge push for album sales
December 2, 200816 yr I can now safely say that my favourite song on the album is the hidden track 'She Said' - why oh why is this only a hidden track! It is real fun! This gets 11/10. Norma
December 2, 200816 yr A little more of my perusals! She Said is my favourite ... without a doubt - I don't think I've heard Gary sound like he enjoyed singing a song as much! I also like (a lot) Said It All, Up All Night, The Garden, How Did It Come To This and large chunks of Here. I say large chunks because I actually love it while it is in that accoustic, almost 'country' feel at the beginning (and when it goes back to it) but I'm really not fond of the hippy/rock direction it goes in at time - at times the tunes don't work together - like two totally different songs have been spliced together without thinking that they don't really go! Having said that - I love the pure rock at the end with the guitars. I really don't like Hello (When I'm Cleaning Windows) and although I really do like The Circus ... it is just too much Gary! In fact - it is only Gary. I hope they never release that as a single as I can see the criticism coming at that like it did at IWFL! Norma Ooops! Forgot ... goes without saying that I like GD too!
December 2, 200816 yr i think this album will shine alot more when its toured and our song opinions will change
December 2, 200816 yr Isn't it great Norma that we like other songs on the album? It shows that for each one is something inside :yahoo: . Up all night seems to be very liked, also from the media . Hope they will choose as the second single ! I heard a youtube link from Paris and Mark and Jason have sung great! I want now to hear live Hold me a light also  ...

Hope they will choose as the second single ! I heard a youtube link from Paris and Mark and Jason have sung great! I want now to hear live Hold me a light also  ... Up All Night has just GOT to be the next single. Good to follow with a Mark lead (and he does brilliantly on this song - you see I like his voice when its the right song!) It would really be good as a sort of 'double a' with She Said as the other track! For some reason She Said reminds me (a little) of The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know - I know tune-wise its nothing like it ... but Gary's voice sounds almost McCartneyish on it! I'm beginning to go off Here though - it sounds like two completely different songs cut up into segments and then spliced back together alternately. I'd like both of these songs separately ... but I don't like them together ... they just don't go! If I'm honest ... I'd have preferred they'd stuck with the beginning segment and enhanced on that in the 'country' vein it was going. The psychedelic rock bit doesn't work for me - until the very, very end when the guitars come in. Norma
December 2, 200816 yr I can now safely say that my favourite song on the album is the hidden track 'She Said' - why oh why is this only a hidden track! It is real fun! This gets 11/10. Norma I've just finished playing the album for the second time and I totally agree. I hope they are planning to release a version of the track with a Mexican/Cuban/Caribbean sounding Horn arrangement on it so that it sounds like a calypso track you'd see danced to on Strictly Come Dancing. This is only the second album I've ever bought where the bonus track is the best thing on it. (The first was the Manic Street Preachers - Know Your Enemy which had an ultra political track on it called "We're All Bourgeois Now" at the end). I'll review the album later this week, but I've got to say I like to see your forum is honest enough to admit if tracks are not quite up to scratch in stark contrast to another artist who has released a very similar named album this week.

We can be brutally honest here on the Take That forum ... it is one of our many qualities! The idea of a caribbean re-mix on She Said sounds brilliant!
