I dare say this has been done before, but here is my album of Christmas Songs (pre 2000 of course):

1. Saint Etienne - I Was Born On Christmas Day

Fantastic Xmas song. Only made No.37 in December '93. Who knows, maybe one day it will peak higher.

2. Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping

Again, a chart flop, but a classic.

3. Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

OK, it's starting to get over-played at Crimbo now, but anything with the late great Kirsty MacColl in it gets a thumbs up from me.

4. Saint Etienne - My Christmas Prayer

The B-Side of #1 above. A great cover of the long forgotten Billy Fury track from '59.

5. Jona Lewie - Stop The Calvary

Arguably a more credible festive offering than most. Made No.3 over Christmas 1980.

6. Whigfield - Last Christmas (Dance Remix)

Yes OK, I'm very sad, but I can't help but love this version. No it's not better than the Wham original, but I've heard it so often...

7. Mr Hankey - Mr Hankey The Christmas Poo

 Made No.4 in December 1999. Well, it makes me laugh.

8. Boney M - Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord

God knows why I like this

9. The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

From the great Christmas album from Phil Spector originally released in '63 (or so I believe).

10. Sugababes - New Year

OK, it's not pre-2000, but it's from 2000. Does this classify as "retro". A great great song, shame it missed the Top 10.

11. Kate Bush - December Will Be Magic Again

This doesn't get played that often surprisingly.

12. Bing Crosby - White Christmas

Well a Christmas album wouldn't really be complete without this.

tbh im really bored of crimbo songs.... ive said it before, i cant understand why in this cut throat commercial age contemporary acts dont try a crimbo song, they can be real earners and ive sick of the usual suspects.

you have an interesting set of choices there, mr hanky is priceless! , still love the waitresses and kate bush..

oh i dunno... theres plenty of tacky tracks around anyway, crimbo songs dont have to be tacky..

oh lord... you have a point, the ting tings could be seen doing cristmass wrapping... i hope not, it was bad enough when the spiceys did it.

but then again it would just sound almost like the original

otoh - a recent interview i read with Jules de Martino from ting tings was like a fantasy band thing where you had to make up your ultimate band from various band memebers - tina weymouth was chosen and de Martino said that Tina's like Katie's hero and that she was very into all that tom tom club stuff - how obv was that answer!!!!

so why do it?... i dont see any pointin releasing a cover that sounds exactly like the original... but then again the tingtings have a growing army of fans.... the waitresses didnt.

well i dont think they would cover that record - more likelt in this age of radio 1 live launge it would have to be something like mary's boy child mixed with ra-ra-rasputin (but done in a tom tom club style  )

me thinks i may have to have knowledge of john barrowman or seal's recent albums here as i think this conversation may go onto a why do they do covers that sounds exactly like the original kinda thread instead....
