Anyone heard of Gaslight Anthem? They're are a top notch new band from NJ - all the mags are finally recognising them as well as XFM picking up on their latest tune "Great Expectations"! I'm not usually a fan of Pop/Punk which is how they are being described but I really liked these guys - I'd say they have a much more traditional raw sound in comparison to the high pitched American stuff around atm. Don't judge a book by it's cover as they say =)

thanks.

then again seeing as they've been mentioned in the same breath as the hold steady in some reviews (tho think it was also referencing the Replacements' angst at the same time) i can see why someone may want to have but this in here - esp if metal is like a uncharted subculture to them...

...then again maybe certain punk stuff like buzzcocks and the clash would be more suitable in here if they happed to arrive on the scene now (tho i'm guessing tom artrocker would give any new clash a better review than their live album  - tho obv the name would have to be more art-rock and now sound like another rivial music mag  )

well i can see why it was put here, it's just we get f*** all topics in the punk and metal forum so i think we deserve this one  especially as before recently they have been mainly popular with punk crowds.

wow man didnt realize it was like that - thought that indie and ('mainstream') rock would be the area going stale out of the two (propped up by random synthpoppers   ) - esp with all the punk stuff but also the hype behind the recent GnR, Metallica, AC/DC albums...

nah Indie is always more popular with this forum, there is only a small minoirty who are interested in punk and metal, but there have been popular threads on GnR, Metallica and AC/DC recently and the forum has a short rising popularity but alot more indie and mainstream rock acts more often do better in the charts, which on this forum is what gives people an interest in the first place.

well maybe those few bands who sound like simple minds ("are you purist or are you wobbler" cv guardian review yesterday - i think) but there seems to be a greater range of stuff in the punk and metal area....esp if you compare the indie section with the pop section and compare the pop charts with artrocker (which i've been reading this morning to my sins!!!)

I know this would probaly be considered heresy by Chris but I hear Springsteen and The Killers in this album. I think this is a really good album but I can't hear any punk in this.

man your not the only one - springsteen's name has come up as well in reviews too (well just like hold steady and soph-sesh killers)

Springsteen yes, definatly, but Killers i hear none of on the album.

I hear punk in it but not majorly i guess, but before the media caught on and started giving the album brilliant reviews the only people who ever bothered with them were punk fans, for example they are played all the time on Mike Davies on Radio One (The punk show and the only show worth listening to on radio one, 2am tuesday's) and played the Lock Up stage at Reading this year (the punk/ska/hardcore dedicated stage at Reading, sadly i missed TGA due to drink  ).

I guess it's all to do with the singer's voice. Not the music particularly. He just sounds a bit like Brandon Flowers at times.

but wasnt Sam's Town supposed to be their 'Springsteen' album? so could The '59 Sound album be advertised with the tagline "for all those Sam's Town fans who hate the wussy synthpop of human as they think its so gay that everybody is going it dancer or is it denser and cant be bothered with all that c**p as they just wanna rock"

I think that would just about sum it up :P
