Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira celebrates his 100th birthday today (December 11th) and shows no signs of slowing down as he's just finished his latest movie and has already two projects in hand.

Some curious facts about him:

- He once held Portugal's national record for the pole-vault.

- His first feature film (Aniki Bóbó 1942) had a cast mostly formed by children.

- He's mocked in Portugal by doing long and quiet shots and the actors talking very slowly.

- His longest film is 410 minutes long.

- His grandson, actor Ricardo Trepa appeared in 19 of his movies.

- "Vou para casa / Going home" (2001) was #1 in the box-office in Italy.

- He once repreended Catherine Deneuve for her onset diva behaviour.

- In 2002, he also became the oldest music video director when he directed this video for Portuguese superstar Pedro Abrunhosa.

I find it really pretty damn cool that he's still out there making films despite his age....

I think he probably just wants to eventually die doing what he loves doing.... Respect to the bloke....
