Just saw this today. It was fantastic, very empowering, moving, and joyous film despite its content. Also has a lot of interesting parallels to today. Still. Sean Penn absolutely must get the Oscar for Best Actor.

BUMP....

Watched this last night.... Incredble.... I'm almost rendered speechless by Sean Penn's absolutely staggering performance in this film.... It's a VERY difficult choice now for people to choose between Penn and Mickey Rourke, who gives an equally amazing performance in The Wrestler, a very different film, but no less emotionally charged....

Milk is simply fanstastic though, and I like the way Van Sant concentrated more on Harvey Milk as a human being rather than as a mere symbol, giving Harvey more humanity and fleshing him out as a more 'real' human being with human flaws and failings I feel gives the film its emotional heart and soul, and it makes the ending that much more emotionally resonant, but never forgetting that Harvey Milk was just as important a symbol in the struggle for civil/human rights as were Martin Luther King, Huey Newton and Malcolm X..... I was honestly in tears at the end of this film, I dont know if I'm getting more sappy in my old age or what (LOL), but the superb writing, directing and the way Penn plays the role just really got me....

Penn was indeed very brave to take on this role given the homophobic climate in the US, and he deserves admiration and respect, because it is clear to me that he stands against what his country and Govt has done, his anti-Iraq stance is well known, and now his anti-homophobia stance has made itself apparent... He really puts everything into this role, and is probaby the greatest acting he's ever done, which is no mean feat given the fact that he was superb in "Dead Man Walking", "Mystic River", "The Assassination of Richard Nixon" and "Carlito's Way"...

I now wish to change my opinion on the "Best Actor" front, Penn just slightly edges it for me now over Rourke, but godammit, I wish both of them could get awards....

The rating for the film...? Off the charts, there's no rating at all, because really everyone should see this film, because, as the film says loud and proud, every one of us actually knows someone who's gay...... Brilliant, simply brilliant....
