April 24, 201312 yr Since 1999, my chart of the year has been compiled by points, and the winner on points is not always the real winner. I will list both. 1998 and before I just compiled the chart of the year based on what I felt at the end of the year. 2012: On points, "World's End" by Army Navy. Actual #1 was "Dave" by Missing Andy which also would have been #1 on points but for the fact it spent 2 weeks in the chart in 2011 which didn't count towards its 2012 total. 2011: "Sunny Side Of The Street" by Sonic Boom Six, also the correct #1 of the year, albeit the weakest of all "#1 of the year" awards. 2010: "Sex With An X" by Vaselines, also correct #1 of the year. 2009: "Other Too Endless" by Polly Scattergood, also correct #1. 2008: "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay. This was very close with "The Day That Never Ends" by Metallica in its "points" battle and it's difficult to know which was my real #1 of the year. The songs are just so totally different. 2007: "Rise" by Ben's Brother. This was in the chart for ages and is a great song but not sure it was the song of the year, which was either "I Wish That I Could See You Soon" by Herman Dune or "Me & You" by Slow Club. 2006: "Loaded" by Idle Hands. But actual #1 was "Start Wearing Purple" by Gogol Bordello, which on points only came about 8th. 2005: "Beautiful Son" by Without Gravity. Runaway #1 of the year and the decade. Good timing to release a song called "Beautiful Son" one week before my son was born. 2004: "Akira The Don's Drinking Song" by Akira The Don. Actually track 2 of their EP, but at the time clearly more popular than track 1. 2003: "Just The Way I'm Feeling" by Feeder. In the chart of the decade this was nowhere near the #1 from that year though, as "This Is The Last Time" by Keane finished 2nd of the decade having had a second chart run in 2004. 2002: "Watching Xanadu" by Mull Historical Society on points, but in reality heavily beaten by "Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish. The chart was weak while MHS was #1. Reel Big Fish was only two #1s later (with Buffseeds in between) but the chart had got a lot stronger by that point. 2001: "Health & Efficiency" by Cinerama. 7 weeks at #1 but not sure why this ended up their biggest hit, I think "Superman" from earlier in the year was better than it. 2000: "Manhattan" by Cinerama, and loads of weeks in the chart but the actual #1 of the year was "Do What You Do (The Earworm Song)" by the Clint Boon Experience with Fran Healy. 1999: "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" by Clint Boon Experience. They definitely had the #1 of the year but disputed with which song, this one, "White No Sugar" or "Comet Theme Number One". 1998: "I'll Show You Mine" by Ultrasound. Strange choice with the epic "Stay Young" being the better known song, but this was the one I picked at the time.
April 24, 201312 yr Now 1997 and beyond and you'll know all these, as they were all hits. 1997: Levellers - What A Beautiful Day 1996: Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger 1995: Pulp : but again not sure whether it was "Common People" or "Sorted For E's & Whizz". By the end of the year I was a bit tired of "Common People" it had been so overplayed. 1994: Pulp - Babies. 1993: Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love (the only time the same as the UK #1 of the year) 1992: Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy. Yes really. Seems everyone thinks now this is twaddle, and perhaps it is a bit, but at the time I was crazy about this song and it topped my chart for 7 weeks. 1991: James - Sit Down 1990: Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens 1989: Guns N Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine. Credited for this year although it first reached my chart in 1988. But this was the "full" version. 1988: Fairground Attraction - Perfect 1987: Marillion: again unsure of the song being Incommunicado or Sugar Mice. Incommunicado was clearly the bigger "hit" in my chart, 5 weeks at #1 compared to 2 for Sugar Mice. 1986: David Bowie - Absolute Beginners 1985: Colourfield - Thinking Of You 1984: Giorgio Moroder & Phillip Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams 1983: Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 1982: ABC - All Of My Heart 1981: Hazel O'Connor - Will You 1980: David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes, but on occasion Air Supply - All Out Of Love was listed as year #1. It was difficult to decide, again both songs totally different. 1979: Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Oliver's Army. Incredibly "Girls Talk" by Dave Edmunds was in 2nd place so Elvis Costello wrote both of the top 2. (We've sen other years where an artist had the top 2 or 3 of the year). 1978: Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Not a single release in the UK, but obviously an album track. In the US this was a single. My #1 of all time. I'm sure you know it even though it wasn't a hit single. (I think Glee Cast may have got this song into the top 75, they definitely recorded it). My top actual UK single release of 1978 was "Rat Trap" by the Boomtown Rats. 1977: Queen - We Are The Champions 1976: John Miles - Music. I didn't do a weekly chart in 1976 but that song was my clear favourite of the year. Going back any further would just be retrospective, even if I picked Bohemian Rhapsody for 1975 (it isn't if I allow album tracks, I like other songs more from A Night At The Opera).
