Posted March 15, 200619 yr Can't wait to hear what will be her new direction... Feist to record new album in Berlin By DENIS ARMSTRONG - Ottawa Sun I wasn’t looking to team up with Feist on her new album. I simply wanted to speak with the indie artist about her Jan. 19 gig at Capitol Music Hall. But when I asked what the working title for her new disc  look for it this fall  is, the road-weary indie chanteuse starts brainstorming. “ ‘Working Title,’ †she repeats on the line from a recording studio outside Paris. “I love it. Let’s call it that. ‘Working Title.’ If I use that, send me an email to remind me to give you a credit.†It’s an offer worth considering, coming from the singer-songwriter whose 2004 album Let It Die, produced by Chilly Gonzales, turned out to be one of the year’s best, winning two Junos, best new artist and best alternative album. Selling gold in Canada and her adopted home France, the album spun into a massive tour that has kept her on the road for almost two solid years. “I’ve been on tour so long now I don’t really have a home base anymore,†she says with no trace of regret. “I stay with friends in Paris, Calgary or Toronto, but my home base is officially a big question mark.†Her home may be a question mark but her nationality isn’t. Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Calgary, the 27-year-old indie darling had been living in the heart of Toronto’s music district. There, after writing her first album, she hooked up and toured with Broken Social Scene. “I feel fortunate. I’ve watched so many people in Toronto that are so incredibly talented and never had an opportunity, so I’m not kidding myself that there’s something else at work here that has a lot to do with the success. Right time, right place. I want to live up to that with the new album. “I want to make sure that the next record is one I can stand beside and believe in because you’re going to be singing (the songs) every night.†She can see the light at the end of the tunnel. As we speak, she’s recording a new song for Ethan Hawke’s new movie The Hottest State. Then she resumes the tour until February, when she heads back to Toronto to celebrate her birthday on Feb. 13. “I am so grateful to be a Canadian. You don’t notice how Canadian you are when you’re home, but every time I’m in an airport waiting for a flight to Canada, I can feel it beating in the blood.†Feist is then off to Berlin to record the new album. The one we’re calling “Working Title.†The new songs are more personal and more poetic, influenced perhaps by the writing of erotic beat poet Jack Spicer. “I used to want to be a ... journalist until that urge segued into writing songs. When I’m writing a song, if it doesn’t come naturally after five minutes, I run the risk of not wanting to hear that melody ever again. I want it to be natural and in-the-moment and I don’t want to have to fight it.†She’s been testing out some of the new songs with her new band Jesse and Bryden Baird and Julian Brown, who first played together at the Folk Festival last August. “I’ve gotten into playing solo this year, which I’ve been doing a lot of. But Ottawa was my first concert with my new band. There was a really exciting falling-apart-at-the-seams feeling about that gig that I hadn’t felt for a long time. I really like that.†Source: Canoe.ca
