And so, we get to the number one. A song that took over Latin America in 2007 took over the Radio Newtown chart for more than a month in 2008.

It was first heard in this country when watching Setanta TV coverage of football's Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League. From Argentina to Mexico, from Chile to Brazil, fans could be heard singing their own songs to the same tune...

 

 

But what was it? Much Googling and YouTubing revealed that it was 'Pasos Al Costado', a 2007 hit for Argentine band Turf, which had become as ingrained in the culture of Latin American football as 'You'll Never Walk Alone' had once been in the UK. And within weeks, an obsession with the song took off. It entered the Radio Newtown Top 20 at number one on 8 June, remained there for five weeks, and became by far the most listened to IPod download for the year. And today, I can reveal that Kit Curran's top song for 2008 is
