Some very sexy slices of electro-urban here, with Come On Girl, Disturbia and I Decided (and in some quarters Piece of Me) all making their appearances (and Rihanna and Solange both bowing out at this stage but Britney still with one song left to come!). Britney is the second lowest selling number one of the year, just shy of 425K, with power pop in the form of Hot N Cold at 47 ;o Nat Bed's best song to date is at 48, and would've been higher had her bloody label actually released it here, with indie-influenced pop filling the rest...and Stop & Stare.

Well well well, into the gold zone as we pass the 500K mark with the GORGEOUS Skinny Love, heartbreaking folk at its best from a rather stunning album. Click that link yeah? Fantastic theme night memories at 39 with Dance Wiv Me being a shock number one for me - possibly the most unexpected one of the year ;o Gorgeousness at 38 with the heartfelt rendition of Run from Leona, although I do prefer Forgive Me as we shall see later  At 37 we have the highest non-top five song in the list with the superbly catchy Crying Blood, which only peaked at 8, outselling a good few number ones and countless number twos ;o Rounding out at 36 we have the oddly beautiful Fire In Your Eyes, which was helped by a rather dishy singer

31 //

// 535,969 [2 in April, 11 weeks; 18-9-6-4-2-2-8-27-42-42-43]

At 35 is the divine 80s-inspired electropop of Robyn, her highest peaking track of the year - ditto for Duffy, with Mercy being a splendid debut for the Welsh lass; and Kylie, who scores her biggest hit of 2008 with the divine electro In My Arms  Shady Lady is modern Europop at its very best and was very deserving of its second place (if not first! :(), and Love Song was just too lovable to not be top 40 :o

26 // Little Boots - Mathematics (YouTube Link) // 689,194 [2 in October, 10 weeks; 23-2-7-5-8-19-24-37-49-50]

30 has the fourth-lowest number one of the 21 listed with The World Should Revolve Around me being a glorious 3 minutes of life-affirming and egotistical retro soul-pop which got old fairly quickly unfortunately :( At 29, we have this year's Bleeding Love karaoke equivalent (for me at least :heehee:) in If I Were A Boy, with lots of glorious money notes and silly lyrics when we all know that Be-Be would actually be touching herself for about a day if she woke up with knackers :smoke: Speaking of which, 28 has P!nk unveil her knackers with the oh-so emancipating So What, a fantastic f***-you song apparently not aimed at her husband particularly, although one would think that Monsieur C. Hart is a little tired of being lyrically bashed even if Alecia doesn't mean it ;o We have Madonna's best single of the year in 4 Minutes at 27, further showing that the lady has a gift for fantastic singles choices; and Little Boots' first of two entries in the top 30 at 26, with the electro-geek-tastic Mathematics stealing my heart in October

Oof, Boots gets two entries in a row with the infectious hook from Meddle propelling her into the top 25 :heart: A modern classic R&ballad from Brandy was MASSIVELY underrated chart-wise but managed to get the success it deserved in mine, peaking at 4 and still lurking in the last chart of 2008. Sirusho set the record for the highest jump to number one, shattering that set by UnkleJam under a year before (24-1), by jumping a massive 39 places to number 1 in the last chart of March :drama: The Pussycat Dolls came back with some feisty urban electropop in WIGU, the WAG-anthem of the year clearly; while the Greek Britney, Kalomoira, proved her credentials by finishing third in the ESC with the greatest chavvy summer anthem that never was ;_;

Eurobandið - This Is My Life [iceland]

Portishead - The Rip

Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes

The Saturdays - Up [Allecian X]

Serebro - Opium [Kopečka VI]

Yes, I am aware of the femtasticness and the embarrassment of Alpha/Ashlee/Miley :(

Love Song top 40  I will be personally devestated if Charlotte Perrelli and Maria Haukaas Storeng fail to make the top ten :o let's just put the awful 1998 style remix of Hold On Be Strong that we thought Maria might have sent at one point out of our minds...
A&E FTW!
I predict Goldfrapp to be your #1 track :cheer:

20 // Janet Jackson - Feedback [Torchwood VIII] // 773,344 [1 in January, 9 weeks; 1-1-2-2-5-21-34-26-37]

This was my addiction in January, quite literally ;o My first 400K+ (in a single week) selling song in January in a good few years (even the Wino-Mika battle of 2007 could only muster 320K) looked for about half the year on the verge of finishing top five, before it was toppled by the insurgency of amazingness in the latter half of 08. Still, despite uber-floppage from the one who is apparently flyer than a pelican despite being heavier than a first day period; the video and amazing electr&b production managed to keep this one top twenty

This was another obsession of mine, although this one was the month after and overruled for all its 5 weeks by A&E, which is still to come :drama: This gloriously shameless upbeat and lyrically redundant track verged on dominating my affections and was frankly just impossible to not love  On a more statistical note, Fascination had the longest peak at number two without climbing to number one after since 2005 when Prince - Te Amo Corazon peaked at number two for six weeks :o

Maggie B in the top 20 - I predict a top five for La Roux too

Shame to see Alphabeat fall so early but top 20 is still immense for them

18 // Ashlee Simpson - Little Miss Obsessive [Kopečka IX] // 853,425 [1 in July, 15 weeks; 28-24-20-15-13-1-1-2-2-3-7-14-18-27-30]

Quite obv Ashlee's career best. Good, heartfelt verses followed up by an EPIC chorus and a loffly middle 8. However, this song suffered, as as fem pop-rock tradition dictates (cf. Kelly Clarkson - Sober) the second, VASTLY superior single was ignored by radio in the US and subsequently left unreleased in the UK. UBERMANSON to y'all record companies out there -_-

17 // Miley Cyrus - See You Again (Rock Mafia Remix) // 857,925 [1 in August, 16 weeks; 16-1-2-4-8-14-20-18-21-34-44-44-48-48-50-50]

I feel dirty loving this song as much as I do, but srsly, the Rock Mafia remix turns it into such an electro-pop-rock stormer that it's too irresistible to not do so :(

Oooof  Easily the best song that the BJSC has introduced me to tbh; this Norwegian popstress came out with an epic heartbreaking yet modern and credible pop moment that destroyed all competition - even P!nk's So What :heehee: This is technically a 2006 track but I've included it here as it is one of the few songs that defined my summer

15 // Portishead - The Rip // 920,044 [2 in June, 18 weeks; 26-3-5-2-4-4-3-3-13-22-33-36-36-42-37-42-46-43]

Words cannot describe. Epic in every sense of the word, a slightly electronic folky track for the first couple of minutes before developing into a mechanically rumbling, almost rocky track underpinned by the incessant drum beat underneath the dull, almost squelching thud of the synth; while Beth Gibbons' haunting vocals just dominate. The drumbeat signifying the fade-out at 3:50 is just amazing, while this is easily one of the best fade-outs of the year, leaving you stunned at what you just heard. LISTEN.

18 // Ashlee Simpson - Little Miss Obsessive [Kopečka IX] // 853,425 [1 in July, 15 weeks; 28-24-20-15-13-1-1-2-2-3-7-14-18-27-30]

I bought a Wii game called Popstar Guitar the other day (like a rip off of Guitar Hero but with cheesier songs and only £10 in Game) and one of the songs on it is in fact See You Again (Rock Mafia remix)! I just loved playing along to it and of course, singing along to the stunning lyrics

14 // Janelle Monáe - Many Moons [Kopečka XI] // 934,294 [1 in November, 11 weeks; 48-18-4-1-3-9-3-7-12-17-22]*

'Revolutionize your life and find a way out'

Janelle is one of my tips for 2009, and although I think she'll be too 'alternative' or too similar to Outkast in the eyes of the British public/Radio 1 to do particularly well, Many Moons is a 5 and a half minute opus which begins with an energetic, almost rock-influenced 3 minute punctuated by Janelle's young yelps and irresistible chants and scats, before collapsing into a Vogue-esque break-down listing problems in our world reflective of the dystopia that her alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather, occupies; then concluding with a slow and haunting final minute of Janelle softly singing of a Shangri-la, backed by a sensual, almost spooky guitar. Glorious.

13 // Lady GaGa/Colby O'Donis - Just Dance [MKL VII] // 1,042,425 [2 in September & December (1 in 2009), 24 n-c weeks; 31-17-10-27-31-42R[6]-31-21-13-2-6-12-11-12-12-12-14-13-15-19-15-13-5-2]

Do I even NEED to introduce this track to anyone? Not since Umbrella has there been a track which EVERYONE has loved as they have done with Just Dance. The pop-tastic intro which serves as a very recognisable alert to EVERYONE to get the f*** onto the dancefloor is just the beginning for a 4-minute long piece of pure pop joy which whirls and weaves, going into something new just as it seems as if it may be a perfect time to end. 2009's best pop song already? Quite possibly. Also the first platinum million-seller of the list ;o

OMG Janelle  In my Top 30 too :kink:

12 // Eurobandið - This Is My Life [iceland] // 1,064,981 [1 in April, 16 weeks; 33-27-37-26-19-1-3-6-9-2-3-9-23-23-23-47]

'I opened my eyes; and finally I realised...'

I know I've used the word epic a lot in this list thus far, but I'm sure another forty times won't hurt ;o Anyway, this song DEFINES the word, especially re: dance anthems lasting less than four minutes. This rather fantastic anthem (which only jumped to number 1 upon the new, even epicer (IT EXISTS BECAUSE I SAY IT DOES) version being released) also brought Iceland their best result since 2003, so yayz for them too.

11 // The Saturdays - Up [Allecian X] // 1,117,631 [2 in October, 12 weeks; 24-7-2-3-3-3-5-4-7-18-25-35]

'No hesitation, this is not the time for doubt'

Well, after the $h!t-fest that was If This Is Love, expectations weren't high on the me front for Up. Then OMG. I heard it and cursed the Sugababes, for THIS is the true successor to the legendary Aboutchanao. Had the Sugabbz released this, I predict it would have spent a few hundred weeks at the top of the Multichart, a good few at number 1, etc...unfortunately, brand loyalty counts for a lot these days. Still gave them a very deserved hit though  Up is also the last non-number 1 of the list! :drama:

10 // Serebro - Opium [Kopečka VI] // 1,120,388 [1 in May, 12 weeks; 16-3-2-1-1-7-21-19-29-39-40-43]

'А любовь в тебе и во мне, Как опиум, как опиум (The love in you and in me is like opium, like opium)'

Aaaaaah! This lovely, subtle driving electropop, almost haunting, is aided by the fact it's sung in Russian (I actually urge you foreign language haters to give it a try, it's VERY worth it). It's very mysterious, and there's almost a touch of weariness, hinting at addiction, in the girls' vocals. Beautiful track underpinned by a fantastic backing track. Now can they hurry up and release the album plz?

09 // Leona Lewis - Forgive Me // 1,182,263 [1 in October, 16 weeks; 33-6-4-1-2-4-4-3-6-14-8-12-25-31-39-29]*

'<Insert banal lyric about out of character cheating on lover by timid Leona>'

OK, let's get the lyrics out of the way here. Sweet Escape had some pretty awful/amaze lyrics as well. This song was HIDEOUSLY underrated, and I think I'm the only person...hmmm, alive?, that preferred this to Run, which is a massive shame as the production is just sexual (and better than SE IMO :o) and Leona suits this kinda track as well I think :( Now let's ignore the very uncharacteristic lyrics for Leona here and just watch the video...
