According to British Hit Singles & Albums (published in 2006), here are the Top 20 acts of all time, based on weeks on the chart. The task here is find a favourite song by each act, even if you don't really like them.

Burning Love

Cliff Richard

I Just Don't Have The Heart

Queen

Radio GaGa, or, Who Wants To Live Forever

The Beatles

Yesterday

Madonna

Frozen

Elton John

Well, my favourite of his is This Train Don't Stop There Anymore from 2002. But pre 2000 I'd probably go for Your Song

The Shadows

Michael Jackson

U2

With Or Without You

David Bowie

Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes

Rod Stewart

Live And Let Die

Edited by B.A Baracus

This is incredibly difficult! Especially when it comes to The Beatles ... when any of their 20 worst songs (for me) were probably better than a lot of the others on the list. But here goes:

Elvis Presley - A Little Less Conversation

Cliff Richard - really like the man but cannot think of one song of his that I like.

Queen - easy - Don't Stop Me Now

The Beatles - Fool on the Hill or Strawberry Fields Forever

Madonna - Holiday (picked out of a hat - by the numbers pop)

Elton John - another difficult one - Your Song, Daniel or Nikita

The Shadows - Kon Tiki or Wonderful Land (make Apache seem like paint-by-numbers c**p)

Michael Jackson - easy choice .... Thriller

U2 - easy choice .... Stuck In A Moment

David Bowie - Changes or Pretty Things

Rod Stewart - You Wear It Well

Frank Sinatra - Chicago (My Kind Of Town)

Diana Ross - I get mixed up with solo and with Supremes - so I'm going for Up The Ladder To The Roof

Dire Straits - Money For Nothing or Private Investigator

Simon And Garfunkel - 59th Street Bridge Street Song (Feeling Groovy)

Rolling Stones - easy .... Lets Spend The Night Together

Abba - The Name of the Game

Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World

Phil Collins - sorry ... apart from some Genesis songs - don't like anything he's done - at a push I'd say ... Easy Lover

Paul McCartney - Just Another Day

Norma

so westlife would top this if they were in it?

if they had spend enough weeks in the charts according to the guiness book of british hit singles then YES. clearly they havnt clocked up enough weeks to be included in this list...

the thread header made it quite clear as to what the criteria for this list was.... try reading it m8 :)

Dire Straits never had a number 1 single, and they are in there. It's based on weeks in the Singles AND Album Charts. The Smiths had two number one albums. They are No. 178 on the list.

This isn't based on who the BEST acts are (If so, I'd probably put The Smiths somewhere in the Top 30).

Also, Westlife are nowhere near the Top 20.

Hope this clears some things up

Surprised to see the original Peter Green led Fleetwood Mac getting more votes than the resurrected 70s band with Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie

Well deserved though.

For anyone who doesn't remember, Christine McVie under her maiden name of Christine Perfect was lead singer with the original Fleetwood Mac's stable mates Chicken Shack.

Their biggest hit was I'd Rather Go Blind - #14 in 1969.

why? early mac was far superior to the aor tripe they went on to produce, another act for the 'selling out' thread :)

I fully agree with you that the Peter Green led original Fleetwood Mac are far superior.

It's just that I thought a lot of the forum's members might not remember them.

Yes but Retro within BJ is a little world of its own. It is visited by people old enough to know what good music is!

anyway i think the The Smiths are over-rated...was listening to the liverpool manchester cd on wea's korova records imprint and prefered liverpool...echo and bunnymen think are better - under-rated

as for the list above and really really uncool acts...Cliff Richard's In the Country is like a lost jangly-indie pop classic and really quite good...(oh this might be a subliminal housemartins ref there pop quiz trivia fans)..tho other cliff songs may be seem as better when viewed with the added thought of kitsch hillarity and rollerskating videos put into the equasion  ...but maybe not as funny as barry manilow on totp2 the other night...still laughing about that days afterwards
