Posted December 31, 200816 yr Is anybody going to see this/think it'll be any good? I've never seen Sin City or 300 (this film was created by whoever made those, I assume :/). I'm a bit poor after spending my Christmas money and definitely want to see Role Models so...don't know whether to see this. SAMUEL L JACKSON = A GOOD SIGN? Aye.
December 31, 200816 yr i havent seen it yet but im going to say this now, FRANK MILLER = GOD he wrote and did the art for the sin city comics and then co-directed the film, and the same with 300, the man i s a comic book genius. so to bring a classic comic book like The Spirit (not made by Frank) to the big screen i have ever trust in him, as he is pretty much one of my heroes. even though i have read many bad reviews. [/nerdgasm]

I'm taking my son to see it on Saturday. It isn't my usual kind of film but I like the guy playing the lead - and I'm probably the only non-American on BJ who has heard of him. Jackson is an added bonus. Norma
January 1, 200916 yr even though i have read many bad reviews. [/nerdgasm] yeah i have a feeling that this is gonna be be terrible - gonna be a real disapppointment and not as any well near as good as sin city
January 1, 200916 yr yeah i have a feeling that this is gonna be be terrible - gonna be a real disapppointment and not as any well near as good as sin city sin city is proberly my favourite movie ever so i cant imagine it could be as good  waht is different with this though is that Frank Miller has taken a comic he didnt work on himself where as Sin City he completly did all the story and art and then brought it to screen panel by panel, same with 300 but it's harder to apply that sort of thing to The Spirit and with it not being Frank's creation i have a feeling he may not of know the best way to go about it. I will still see it though.
January 1, 200916 yr FRANK MILLER = GOD Agreed. I love the feel towards Sin City and 300. The effects are absolutely GORGEOUS. If The Spirit is anything like Sin City and 300 then i will be satisfied in his work. However, when the hell is Sin City 2 going to be released  Edited January 1, 200916 yr by Joao Filipe

However, when the hell is Sin City 2 going to be released  They are basing Sin City 2 on a story called 'A Dame To Kill For' (very good one BTW) and they are planning on filiming Sin City 2 & 3 back to back, and frank is working on new stories for it too :w00t: Sin City comics are amazing.
January 1, 200916 yr BAH FRANK MILLER. He's so... gah He's just like MY NAME IS FRANK MILLER AND I USE SELECTIVE COLORING IN MY MOVIES AND IT'S MAINLY RED THOUGH SOMETIMES GREEN AND YELLOW I dunno. I think he's horribly overrated, and I heard that The Spirit was terrible.
January 1, 200916 yr BAH FRANK MILLER. He's so... gah He's just like MY NAME IS FRANK MILLER AND I USE SELECTIVE COLORING IN MY MOVIES AND IT'S MAINLY RED THOUGH SOMETIMES GREEN AND YELLOW I dunno. I think he's horribly overrated, and I heard that The Spirit was terrible. in sin city it is black and white to give as much of the same effect as the comic, so sometimes in the comic he would use another colour to emphasis something, i think the selective colouring is important, if it wasnt like that the movies would'nt be as good (or what sounds like in The Spirit's case, even worse). but tbh if were talking Frank Miller it's all about this: http://zenquality.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/batman-the-dark-knight-returns.jpg
January 6, 200916 yr Well I went to see this finally, this afternoon. The first 15 minutes where like WTF? Everyone seemed so self-conscious ... especially the unknown actor taking the lead. After that though ... it all seemed to be relaxed and I just sat back and enjoyed myself. Sam L Jackson was superb and Dan Lauria was good too. The lead, Gabriel Macht put in a pretty good tongue-in-cheek performance too. I warn you ... those first 15 minutes are a put-off but its worth sticking with. If you like cats ... turn away when they introduce 'Muffin'. I've never seen Sin City and to be honest I've never heard of Frank Miller - I thought he was a character in High Noon! January 6, 200916 yr in Robert Egbert's review he said "to say the characters are like cardboard is an insult to the packing industry" :nocheer: im still gonna see it, dont know when though.
January 6, 200916 yr in Robert Egbert's review he said "to say the characters are like cardboard is an insult to the packing industry" :nocheer: im still gonna see it, dont know when though. To a certain extent the 'cardboard characters' comment is probably a little true ... but its comic-book so I was expecting that. Roger Ebert is widely acknowledged as an absolute w*nker anyway! I think he gave Titanic a higher rating than Shawshank Redemption in his film reviews - so that makes him a bit of silly-sod anyway. Go on IMDb and see what people think of his film views. I may not have heard of Frank Miller but I am fairly familiar with Ebert! Halliwell he is not! And Halliwell had his faults. Honest ... if you can stick with the first 15 minutes you'll like it. It isn't even my kind of film but I liked this one. Norma Edited January 7, 200916 yr by Norma_Snockers
January 7, 200916 yr im still gonna see it, dont know when though. well you gotta be quick - hasnt done that well and so it looks like a lot of the screenings are being cut back next week in many areas to one showing at night...

January 13, 200916 yr The Spirit...... ....GAWD, what a pile of cr@p....... For a supposed "action film with noir elements...." it was an utter crashing bore, wooden acting, a dire plot, dreadful script.... I fell asleep for about 10 minutes half-way through the film (in stark contrast to the film I watched later - The Reader - which kept me totally rapt throughout.....). This is "Sin City" for intellectually challenged 12 year old American children..... An insult to the original comic book creation, and a prime example of a so-called "genius" (Frank Millar) becoming totally complacent and believing his own ludicrous sense of self-importance and his own hype WAY too much..... No, we will NOT accept a bad film from an apparent "culty" name, a bad film is a bad film.... If Joel Schumacher or Uwe Boll had made this pish absolutely NO ONE would be bumming it, because it's oh-gosh FRANK MILLAR, we're all expected to bow down and be somehow "not worthy" of its 'genius'... Or, if we dislike it, the arse-licking fanboys will just say "oh, you just don't GET IT, do you.....?"..... No, we get it alright.... We just dont bloody WANT IT...... I used to like Frank Millar - The Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, his stint on Daredevil, Hard Boiled, Sin City.... All absolutely marvellous comic book works..... The Spirit is not fit to lick the PISH off of any of their shoes..... This is lazy, lazy, LAZY......... writing, directing and acting of the worst kind...... Shame on Sam Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson for gracing this rubbish with their presence...... 0/10. This film just has NOTHING going for it IMO.....

Is Hard Boiled any good? i may read it soon.

Is Hard Boiled any good? i may read it soon. Get the trade paperback of Millar's Daredevil - Born Again..... Absolutely brilliant... Dunno, might be the same thing you describe..... Born Again ends with him fighting a traumatised Vietnam Vet called 'Nuke'.... Hard Boiled is really more about the incredible art by Mobius.... It's hard to get though.... Other Millar greats - Give Me Liberty, Elektra:Assassin, Batman Year One.... Problem is, these days, he's just treading water, not making any effort at all.... His best work is really LONG behind him..... I'd say after the third Sin City book, it all gets a bit cr@p....

I mean I go to the cinema once a week (to take my 11 year old). He wanted to watch this ... and compared to some of the $h!te I've been dragged to see this was Citizen Kane! Some other 'delights' I had the misfortune to watch over the last 12 months being .... City of Ember, Disaster Movie (if you gave The Spirit 0/10 - I'm sure your rating for this pile of tosh would have to be -25 / 10!), Kung Fu Panda (crap!) As I said before - I've never seen Sin City, I haven't a clue who Frank Millar is and I don't particularly like 'comic book' films, but this was OK! I wouldn't choose to watch it again ... but if someone put a gun to my head and said I had to choose between watching this or say, Forrest Gump - I'd choose this 'crap' anyday!
