In mid-2005, a source (Anti-Music) reported that U2 have plans for a new album and are keen to record more. According to Bono there are 24 songs that came out of the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb album sessions, of which the band took 11 for their subsequent record. The Vertigo tour kicked off in San Diego on 28 March and has gone well into 2006 with several tour dates rescheduled for late in the year, so no plans to go back to the studio to record are known of currently. However this has not stopped some fans from speculating that a new album may be forthcoming in 2007, possibly even in late 2006. In the January 2006 edition of Q magazine, Bono said that the band were in fact working on a new album for 2006. Releasing a new album so soon after one as major as How to Dismantle... would not be without precedent for U2; in 1993, during a break in the massive Zoo TV Tour, U2 recorded what was to be Zooropa. The album was released only a year and half after their groundbreaking album Achtung Baby.

There has been some speculation that U2 may re-record their 1997 album, Pop for a tenth anniversary release. Considering recent comments from the members of the band, some see this as more likely than completing the How to Dismantle... sessions. Bono has stated that the biggest mistake the band has ever made was letting their manager book the PopMart tour, as it meant they had to rush to finish the Pop album. This implies that they consider Pop at least a partial artistic failure, despite over 7 million in sales, and that U2 may choose to refine that effort.

As far as the individual members of U2, the Edge has admitted that he writes new songs after every show, but only 1 in 10 of these songs on the road will go anywhere, and has expressed a longing to get back into a recording studio.

Also, after touring with hip-hop star Kanye West, Bono personally stated that the band will "experiment" with newly inspired ideas from hip-hop music.

Songs rumoured to appear on the next album are: [18]

"North Star" - a song from the How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb sessions that includes a guest organ appearance from Michael W. Smith. Smith has described in an interview that it is a tribute to the late Johnny Cash.

"Lead Me In The Way I Should Go" - a contender for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb first mentioned in the February 2003 issue of Grammy Magazine.

"You Can't Give Away Your Heart" - a contender for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb that was first mentioned in SPIN magazine.

"Mercy" - one of the last songs to get cut from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. It was described in Blender magazine as "a six and a half-minute outpouring of U2 at its most uninhibitedly U2-ish"

Maybe. but they are curently in the studio working on a new studio album :D

I also heard about a new compilation.

By the way, the put remixed versions of Pop´s songs on the 90-00 greatest hits, but I prefer the first ones! that album is not that bad! full of fillers but the singles were good

A new compilation??

What on earth could that be...? I mean they have only released 1 album since the last compilation ...

Their "Atomic Bomb" follow up is expected early 2007 apperently :cheer:

A NEW album being recorded by U2 is set to eclipse their massive last work. How to dismantle an atomic bomb, Bono claimed yesterday.

Bono revealed the band were enjoying "being in a room with eachother and playing.

He added "Something happens when we play. We have some sort of chemistry and Edge right now is on fire.

"He's playing guitar like i've never seen him before, so, i like to think the best is yet to come"

U2 began work on the follow up the 2004's How to dismantly an atomic bomb this summer in Bono's Monaco pad.

U2

U2 has posted an update on their Web site on the band's progress in the recording studio. The Irish superstars have been working on new material with producer Rick Rubin at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. According to U2.com, Rubin and the bandmembers met over the summer in France, where new songs were written and demoed. The band also recently was paid a visit by two of the men who made the studio a landmark: Paul McCartney and George Martin.

One of the new songs is described as sounding "like a U2 classic with an instant hook and a mesmerizing chorus." "Bono had demoed it in Dublin," said drummer Larry Mullen. "Then brought it to the band and even in its most basic form you had the feeling that something special was going on. It felt that maybe this time we were not going to be pushing a rock up a hill as we do a lot of the time with new material."

In other U2 news, last week it was revealed that they are collaborating with Green Day on a cover of the 1978 Punk tune "The Saints Are Coming" by The Skids for a charity single. The track will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina, specifically through the Music Rising program co-founded by U2 guitarist The Edge. Now it has been announced that the two bands will perform the song together at the Louisiana Superdome at the New Orleans Saints' home opener on September 25. The performance will be televised on ESPN during the Monday Night Football pre-game show.

The song will be sold online via Rhapsody soon afterwards and a radio broadcast of the MNF performance will be offered nationally by Westwood One.

"My visits to New Orleans gave me a firsthand look at the devastation which tragically destroyed the lives of thousands," said The Edge. "The area’s rich and spirited culture must continue to be restored. Providing musical instruments through Music Rising will not only help the professional musicians but all the churches and schools in need through phase two of the program.â€

"One year later, people continue to be devastated by Katrina’s effects,†adds Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. “We hope that by collaborating with U2, we’ll remind the public that people of the Gulf Coast are still suffering and still need help to rebuild their lives."

I reckon the new album will be out around April / May 2006. :D

You don't think they'll wait for the big milk at Christmas?

But anyways the sound of the Kanye West beats sounds like it will be great

bono has said tht they were under pressure to get Pop finished seeing as the tour was on their heels and they may revisit it as they dont think its finished in their view.

Mercy is from the achtung baby outtakes and is an amazing song, one of my personal faves, and my boyf seems to like it seeing as I play it down the phone to him whenever he rings me lol =D

Of Christmas 2007? If they did then I think some fans might cause a backlash I mean they've come out and said the album will be ready for early 2007 so if they postponed it until Christmas 2007 some fans would most likely cause a riot.

Yes, it was originally meant to be released late 2006 so X-mas 07 is unlikely. Thank god :D

I reckon they will release it circa September 2007.

Yeah,

They'd want higher sales so could just say there was "delays" etc

But tbh they would have high sales whenever they released....
