Posted January 3, 200916 yr Quite simply! What is the weirdest ... but still highly entertaining film you've seen. For me the two stand-outs are: Frailty and Donnie Darko. Weird beyond belief but they're two of the best films I've seen. Norma
January 3, 200916 yr Mulholland Drive. Utterly bizarre but totally riveting. I found the film hysterical, frightening and deeply sad. I ended up watching it 4 times in the first week, trying to figure it out. There are elements of nostalgia, vulnerability, intrigue, macabre, jealousy and inane naiveté all tied to some mysterious and very loosely-tied plot.
January 3, 200916 yr Being John Malkovich Nothing will top that in weirdness but it was a cracking movie
January 3, 200916 yr Runner up - Mars Attacks I always thought Mars Attacks was an underrated spoof. Jack Nicholson is marvelous in it!
January 4, 200916 yr Author Seconding Mulholland Drive. I just can't get into David Lynch films though. I even disliked The Elephant Man ... and I thought for sentimental reasons alone I may like that one. The thing that really put me off him (apart from Eraserhead) was the Twin Peaks film. I was bored titless from start to finish. I had to go and watch Bob Roberts the next day to reaffirm my belief in film-making. Having said that ... I haven't seen Blue Velvet which I'm assured is very good. Norma
January 13, 200916 yr I'll "Third" Mulholland Drive.... Absolutely astounding film-making.... "Inland Empire" is even weirder..... Leading on from Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly's second film "Southland Tales" is just completely frazzled to the extent that it frankly left me a bit baffled.... Some quite bizarre choices of actors (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake) playing roles which are really NOTHING like you would associate them with, and for the most part, they do extremely well (esp. The Rock, Scott and Gellar).... It's a bit of a mess and totally bizarre, but when it does work, BOY, does it work..... It's one of these films where you're just not sure if it's utter genius or totally cr@p..... Dead Man - Johnny Depp is absolutely astounding (he really should have won an Oscar for this...) in Jim Jaramusch's poetic (utilising the poetry of William Blake), existentialist and thoughtful take on the Western genre shot in beautiful black and white photography, a meditation on life and death and the spiritual hereafter.... It's perhaps not "weird", but certainly not mainstream, it has a wonderfully languid pace which some will probably mistake for being "slow", but it's perfectly paced and knows where it wants to get to.... Absolutely haunting and beautiful.... Film Making at its best..... A great companion piece for this would be the equally languid, poetic and beautiful "Assassination of Jesse James".... Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia - Absolutely astounding (and barmy) take on the Greek myth of "Orpheus" set on the lawless "Tex-Mex" border, part Greek Myth, part revenge thriller, part Wetern, part Action film.. One of Sam Peckinpah's finest films, an under-rated GEM..... El Topo - I cannot even begin to describe the weirdness and barminess of this film.... Anything I could say about it would probably spoil your enjoyment of this inspired insanity.... Let's just say that this is VERY loosely described as a "Western", but it sure as hell aint no John Wayne movie......  Be warned though, there's a pretty nasty rape scene in the film, people say it's a real rape, others dont..... Director Alejandro Jodorowski went onto make the truly distubing and quite horrifying "Santa Sangre".... Recommended for all you lot who think that rubbish like "Saw 5" or "Hostel" is scary...... :P

I'm going to have to watch out for it on dvd. The WIld Bunch is in my top ten list of best films ever. Norma
