The Stooges guitarist and co- founder Ron Asheton has been found dead in Michigan.

Police told local press that Asheton, 60, had been dead for several days before he was found. He is believed to have died of a heart attack.

Asheton formed the legendary band with his brother Scott and vocalist Iggy Pop in 1967. The following year they were signed to Elektra Records, with their eponymous debut album following in 1969.

The band’s classic second album Fun House, produced by John Cale, was released in 1970, with a third, Raw Power, appearing three years later. All three albums sold poorly at time of release but came to a wider audience over the years, leading to a reformation in 2003. A new album, The Weirdness, was released in 2007, when the band played a memorable Glastonbury festival date.

The Stooges are currently in the running to be inducted into the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
