Help / advice needed here folks. Would you take an 11 year old to a Bob Dylan concert? Bearing in mind the only stuff of Dylan's I know he likes (loves actually) is Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like a Woman, and songs of that ilk! Or would I be better off waiting for Scouting For Girls to come to Liverpool again?

Well I know that, and you know that ... however there is also the voice quality. The songs my son likes are from the 60's very early 70's recordings. I've always loved Dylan's unique voice (in fact I largely only like Dylan singing Dylan songs) but I remember seeing / listening to him at Band Aid in 85 and I wished he'd shut up! I mean ... he's in his 70's now isn't he? I'm not sure any 70 year old can sing.

there is also the fact your planning on taking an 11 year old, when i was 11 i may of not been happy being dragged to see Bob (although maybe my music taste had been there enough to enjoy it).

I love Bob Dylan songs and i hate his voice live! So i codn't decide for myself if i want to go to his gig.

I don't think your son would like it too much: Dylan's songs are all about lyrcis and they are not so easy to be understand from a 11 years old. But if you take him, he would remember someday in the future that he has seen the legend Bob Dylan is. Perhaps it would help if you would tell him more about Bob Dylan before the gig...

Its actually his idea Iris. He heard the advert on the radio (he's playing in Liverpool - Dylan - not my boy  ) But I think he has this vision that he'll be hearing the voice he hears on the CD - when in fact the voice he hears will be a voice that over the years has declined greatly (and whether he'll be able to make out the lyrics will be debatable).

LOL...i spent a couple of years ago a lot of money for some BD live recordings - i heard it twice and they are good only for dust catching (that was a lection to me to hear more from an artist before buying his records :naughty: ). God, they were awful back in the day, so i don't think that he improved in the last years. But it doesn't mean that his voice is worse now - i heard Joan Bez and she still has a wonderful voice!

Try to find some youtube recent live recordings. If your son still want to see him after that, why not?

Till now i am going this year only to Depeche Mode and Kaisers Chiefs. And in my city or the next big city are coming also Elton John, Bob Dylan and Oasis. Well, i am not cool - i don't think i will spent my money for them :teresa: . The hardest decision was Dylan, as i adore his music, but i also know that i don't care for him....

I think you're right (and Chris). The Youtube idea is good though! Thanks ... I'm going to try and put him off because I know he'll say 'well he doesn't sound the same as on the CD' .... 'I'd rather have gone to Legoland!'

Dylan tickets are pretty pricey too i think, and i cant imagine he is anything special live anymore.

I wouldn't bother seeing him live now

Bob Dylan is one of my all time favourite artists but he is shot now, an embarrassment almost, it is sad to see such a massive decline in a legend

If you think you will be seeing a guy in his prime forget it

  Well I know I won't be getting that. I don't think I've liked anything since Knocking on Heaven's Door and as I said, when I heard him on Band Aid it was like .... What The Hell!!!! I did like his involvement in the Travelling Wilbury's though! I don't know ... it would be nice to say I saw him while he was alive (he can't have much longer to go on can he?) Oh I'll see what happens in Liverpool on Saturday ... I may be overcome by a whim!

I love Bob Dylan, stuff like The Hurricane, Forever Young, Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like A Woman for example would easily make my all time Top 40 songs if I did one, I can remember sharing many a beer and a chat about Bob Dylan music with the late Matthew Harding of Chelsea fame and Dylan is one of my all time fave singers/musicians but no way would I see him now from what I have been told from many that have seen him in recent years, I would rather remember him in his prime than see a sad shuffling man trading on former glories like a punch drunk ex boxing champion

oddly enough i dont know what to make of dylan... ok i know his songwriting skills are/were immense and he has penned some of the very best tracks ever... but i just dont know after all these years whether i like him or not...

I think it is exactly like with Cat Stevens. I adore his music, but i won't see him live now...

Cat Stevens though, does still have a good singing voice (from the last I heard) even if I don't like the stuff he sings now.

I wouldn't take him to see Dylan now, buy him a greatest hits CD for his birthday if he really likes his music.
