Review: Celine Dion's 'Taking Chances' took no chances — and that's cool

Everyone's a diva.

OK, maybe not everyone. But a good number of folks at Wednesday night's Celine Dion concert were singing along, note for note, with the petite performer.

That's a tribute to why the woman has such a strong following: her songs -- love 'em or hate 'em -- are catchy, easy to remember, and she makes it seem so darn simple, everyone thinks they can do it.

(Memo to the guy behind me: not everyone can.)

But Dion knows what her fans like, and -- with 18,000 of them packed into the AT&T Center to hear her "Taking Chances" tour -- she delivered.

La Diva Dion didn't scrimp on the favorites, opening the concert with "I Drove All Night," before working her way through "The Power of Love," "Because You Loved Me," "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" and more.

She also worked in some selections off her new album, including the title track, "Taking Chances," a ballad with more of a rock edge that worked well to keep the energy up.

Dion's voice was ... big. One imagines she could have been heard throughout the AT&T Center even without a microphone, and with one, there was no missing a breath she took. But, despite a little oversinging, notably on "How Do I Get You Alone?", her tone was clean and pleasantly full. Her technical mastery was on display as well: long passages and impressive vocal acrobatics showed off a truly incredible instrument.

On the whole, her show was more intimate than one would expect from the queen of the big ballads, but still throbbed with high energy. Even a more introspective rendition of "All By Myself" rocked the house.

It was a high-tech show, but smartly, not overwhelmingly, so. Even a rendition of "The Prayer," sung in duet with a video of tenor Andreas Bocelli, was smooth and not nearly as gimmicky as it could have been.

Dion delivered two encores that built on the night's energy. The first, "River Deep, Mountain High," was an all-out boogie fest. The second, "My Heart Will Go On," for which the singer appeared in a flowing back dress that billowed out in the currents of strategically placed fans, was atmospheric and moving -- a classy ending to a fun night.

Throughout the night, an array of glitzy peek-a-boo costumes underscored that Dion is fresh off her Vegas show. Grooving in heels that were taller than her skirt was long, the petite singer had the crowd in thrall. Other than the stock arm maneuvers and a little step-ball-change-shuffle action, Dion didn't do much dancing, but a cadre of lithe muscled performers delivered solid choreography.

Between those dancers, the Rubik's-cube-like stage, the musicians and the images projected on screens around the stage area, the show was as much of a visual feast as an aural one. And Dion herself is a consummate performer; the crowd -- cell phone cameras at the ready -- lapped up every detail. They took no chances on missing a minute.
