Bring on the ECL Quarter Finals draw on Friday.

Today's match proves conclusively if Gerrard & Torres had been fit for most of the season then Liverpool would have been in poll position to win the title:

2008/09 PL matches with both Torres & Gerrard playing vs matches with one or both missing:

P W D L Pts % Ratio

9 8 1 0 25 92.6%

20 9 9 2 36 60.0%

Manchester United are still going to comfortably win the League due to having the best squad in the Premiership (unless they go on a Keegan Newcastle United collapse of form which I can't see remotely happening) as opposed to Liverpool who have arguably only the third if not the fourth best squad in the Premiership. But I reckon Liverpool's best XI is more than a match for any other side in Europe on their day. Unfortunately they just don't have the financial clout to remotely compare with Chelski or Manchester United which is why week in week out they should always fall short of those two sides in the Premiership.

Liverpool's best XI is as good as any side in Europe's, it's just the depth where we lack.

Vidic was shocking today and yes he's been v.consistent for Man Utd this season but is it just a coincidence he played the worst game of his season against Liverpool? Nah I don't think so. Torres ran hm ragged today. For all of Vidic's power he is by no means the fastest in the world, where as Torres is strong AND he's extremely fast.

Man Utd have hardly been amazing all season either. They've just been like Liverpool at the beginning of the season - grafting out results when they've not been playing well. For all of Man Utd's never give up attitude today they were just beaten by a good Liverpool side. To say Liverpool won cos Man Utd were $h!t is quite frankly bullshit. I'm not saying all Man Utd fans are like this (as i've spoken to a few today who said they got beaten by the better side) but some fans need to take off their tinted specs.

And as per usual I heard the most vile chants from some sections of the crowd at the beginning of the match. Some fans are so obsessed with Liverpool FC its quite frankly worrying.

I hope for the sake of English football that Liverpool & Manchester United are drawn in the same half of the ECL draw on Friday.

Michel Platini knows the only way to stop the Premiership continuing to dominate European Football for years to come is for a Liverpool v Manchester United final in Rome in May, and hope their rival fan(atic)s added to the Italian police and their own Ultras is a recipe for anarchy and carnage.

Oh there'd be trouble. Probably bits from both side as both fans have cocky sets of fans, although I would say probably one set more than the other (see Jose Mourhino and Steven Gerrard) but I reckon there'll be trouble in the final whoever plays. Every team has their own set of hooligan twats, and added that to the poor policing in Rome it's a recipe for disaster.

It was actually hilarious. 1) to see Man Utd fail so badly and 2) because it just proves how much of a joke Liverpool & moreso Rafa is, because even though they can end Chelsea's unbeaten run at home which ws nearly 5 years old, beat Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate and beat Man Utd home and away, after 5 years he still hasn't managed to learn how to beat rubbish teams on a consistant basis or follow up huge wins with a decent result (unless the next game is also huge).

Just this season:

1. Beat United 2-1 without Gerrard and Torres. Next league game: 0-0 against Stoke.

2. Beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.. Next two games: A late penalty to beat Portsmouth and a defeat to Spurs.

3. Beat Newcastle 5-1, probably their best game of the season so far (performance wise) and Robbie Keane looking at his best. What followed: the rant, another 0-0 with Stoke and Robbie Keane was never seen again.

4. Beat Chelsea 2-0. Next: Defeat to local rivals Everton in the cup and another late winner against Portsmouth.

5. Beat Madrid in Madrid. Next: 2-0 defeat to a Boro team who hadn't won for months.

So, a mauling of Madrid and another of Man Utd. What next? An embarassing home defeat to Villa?

One thing is that United probably got rid of all their mistakes and 'unluckiness' in one game. Awful performance from Vidic, a red card, a PENALTY AT OLD TRAFFORD(!), VDS not moving for a free-kick.

I think it's pretty safe to assume if both Gerrard and Torres had played more than 9 games together then Liverpool would be closer on points. Don't forget they both destroyed 'the world's best central defenders' yesterday. Ofc it's all ifs and buts, but i'm pretty sure Liverpool would be closer.

Like i've said before, Liverpool's weakness if their inability to break teams down. It needs to be adressed as if we'd turned the games we've drawn into wins we'd be top of the league. Now Parry's going hopefully Rafa will be able to bring in all the players he wants for once.

  • Author
it's just like me saying, IF we beat you these two games, we'd have won the league already...

Yes exactly. If they'd been fit all season we might be near the bottom of the league. Who knows? But I definitely think we'd be a LOT closer.

  • Author

Yes. That is true. But you didn't beat us, and never really looked like beating us in either games.

The same could be said for if Torres and Gerrard were fit we'd be closer. Just like Man Utd would be not top if Ronaldo only played 9 games this season. It's all ifs and buts like I said before.

Vidic, more so

Vidic has been a rock despite the two games against you

we're not a one man team

Vs Bolton Berbatov saved us, and i can remember about 3 other games where he has, aswell

same goes for Rooney, Tevez..

  • Author

Despite what peopel spout Liverpool are not a two man team either... I read on a 606 blog today that we're a top 6 team without Gerrard and Torres. Funny how we still beat Man Utd earlier in the season without either.

With Ronaldo, at the beginning of the season when he didn't play you dropped points, and the same happened last year. I think he's v.influential in the same way Gerrard and Torres are - he makes Man Utd click.

The past 3 games i've seen Vidic has been playing a bit off, maybe the season is getting to him idk.

getting to him? he's cold as ice

and what did he do wrong against Inter? he marked one of the world's best players out of the game

  • Author

He looked a bit shaky, dare I say, even a bit too cocky? United were too relaxed against Inter. Another day Inter would have made Man Utd pay.

He was poor against Newcastle too. But yeah he has been consistent all season, maybe the red card will do him good.

world's best defender, still

and Inter were crap because that's exactly what they are

like madrid, just a big name, not a big team

I think it's pretty safe to assume if both Gerrard and Torres had played more than 9 games together then Liverpool would be closer on points. Don't forget they both destroyed 'the world's best central defenders' yesterday. Ofc it's all ifs and buts, but i'm pretty sure Liverpool would be closer.

To be honest I'm not so sure that it would be such a huge benefit. Liverpool do to play better when they are together but their impact would be much less if they plyed more regularly. It's the same with Man Utd, everytime Rooney returns he's really good for 3 or 4 games and certainly wins them points. After that though the impact he has seems to be less. Gerrard and Torres have never got passed the impact stage because one of them always gets injured.

Also, having Torres and Gerrard not play for such a great amount of games is probably beneficial for the other players. Everyone only ever talks about Gerrard and Torres as Liverpool's match winners. When they're playing, it doesn't matter so much if the other players don't play at their best because it's seen as the job of Torres and Gerrard to get them out of trouble. When they aren't playing they have to prove themselves to the everso critical media and public that the are actually good enough.

Benitez signs long-term Reds deal

BBC Sports News

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has ended speculation over his future at Anfield by signing a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2014.

Benitez's long-term future had been in doubt following behind-the-scenes problems at Liverpool.

"My heart is with Liverpool, so I'm delighted to sign this new deal," said the 48-year-old.

"I love the club, the fans and the city and with a club and supporters like this, I could never say no to staying."

Benitez, who has been at the club since 2004, added: "I always made clear I wanted to be here for a long time and when I complete my new contract it will mean I have spent over a decade in Liverpool.

"The club is greatly respected around the world due to its incredible history and tremendous heritage. It is my aim to uphold those values and help create a new chapter in our history.

"Throughout this process, I would like to thank the owners for their hard work in finalising the deal. All of us at the club want the same thing, which is to be successful by winning major trophies."

More to follow.

Thank God for that now that it's offical.

Stops all this silly speculation, and now means Benitez can properly plan for the future.
