TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2008 British singer Dido leads musical pack

It seemed like just about every big name musician/ group came out with a new CD in 2008.

Even Guns 'N Roses released new music after a 17-year absence. And Britney Spears slowed down the train wreck to release a decent effort.

Maybe the Mayan calendar was wrong and the end of the world won't wait until 2012. When Jessica Simpson has a good country album, it definitely raises some concerns.

Here are 10 albums that stood out in one of the best music years in recent memory:

1. "Safe Trip Home," Dido (Arista Records): The London-based singer returns with her most consistent CD, which features layers of instruments. Each listen reveals new sounds and makes for a different experience.

2. "Death Magnetic," Metallica (Warner Bros. Records): This Bay Area metal band could have been left for dead after the three awful albums that followed "The Black Album." Thankfully, it's rediscovered its roots. This is its best disc since 1988's "... And Justice for all."

3. "GNV FLA," Less Than Jake (Sleep It Off Records): Florida's favorite ska/punk band releases its most listenable album since "Hello Rockview." It's sure to silence the naysayers.

4. "Champion," The Audition (Victory Records): Sophomore effort by Chicago's punk-pop band proves there's more to the Windy City scene than just Fall Out Boy and Kanye West.

5. "Doomtree," Doomtree (Doomtree Records): The Minneapolis-based hip-hop collective makes good use of great beats and mic skills on this year's must-have rap album.

6. "Appeal to Reason," Rise Against (DGC Records): Another Chicago punk band makes the Top 10 and reminds listeners of the social/political anthems of Bad Religion, with singer Tim McIlrath's voice recalling that of The Offspring's Dexter Holland.

7. "We Mean Business," EPMD (EP Records): The hip-hop legends return, strong with guest appearances from Method Man, Redman and Raekwon.

8. "Theater of the Mind," Ludacris (Def Jam): One of the few popular rappers who has no need for gimmicks like voice-changing synthesizers. Ludacris continues to be original.

9. "Machine 15," Millencolin (Epitaph): The Swedish punk rockers' latest slice of catchy songs will remain in your head for days.

10. "Tronic," Black Milk (Fat Beats): The Detroit-based rapper takes listeners on a journey through soundscapes ranging from jazz-flavored beats to laid-back grooves.
