Okay i've been reading up and the official promo dates thus far are:

 

BET - July 23rd, small interview and introducing the video. - SNORE

Performing on the America's Got Talent results show on August 5th - BRILLIANT!

Mini concert on the Today Show on the album's release, like what she did with E=MC2 on GMA last year... - BRILLIANT!

 

So at least she is lining up some good promo... Now all we need is a good lengthy interview, like Oprah or Ellen, or both even. :kink:

Don't worry Kelly, "Obsessed" is starting to take off. Give it more time before we call it unsuccessful.

Anyway, the album push back is confirmed. This sucks, as there's no chance in HELL "Memoirs" is going #1 with Jay-Z's record dropping a few days before. His first week album numbers are always very high, especially if his lead single is going to be a hit (and w/ Kanye & Rihanna, it's looking that way). I understand their reasoning, and "Obsessed" is taking off (even on Pop) but it's a bad time to release it and they may have ruined her chances of securing a #1 album.

Jay-Z's album is released four days before Mariah's though. Your typical record sees a 66% sales decrease during week two; it's less if week one is only a half-week so Jay-Z's week-two sales (the week in which Memoirs goes on sale) might decrease by 40% or so. Even so there's plenty of oppurtunity for Mariah to get the #1 slot so long as Obsessed does become huge by September (and she might do well to release H.A.T.E. U to iTunes the week before the album release). American Gangster in 2007 (when sales were bigger) sold 425k first week; assuming he got this many during the four days, and his sales were only to decrease by an abnormally small 30%, he'd be looking at sales of about 300k during Memoirs' release week. And I'm sure she can get 300k; after all E=MC2 opened with 463k so as long as Obsessed can become the hit Touch My Body was, she shouldn't have a problem.

I thought their release was the same week?

Gah! Confirmed now. :( I wanted to have the album as my anniversary present, now I have it as my birthday present. :lol:

 

Does that mean she's going to be re-scheduling her promo dates? There's not really much point performing a mini concert on the Today show three weeks before the album's release... I'm pleased she's steering clear of Whitney (who i'm pretty sure is in for a #1), but it gets even worse when she's up against possibly the biggest rapper in the US. :arrr: It's all about timing and this is all going terribly wrong already...

 

Until I see Obsessed finally starting to pick up on iTunes (and it's failing pretty quickly all things considered) i'm deeming it unsuccessful. :( I don't know how to read these airplay charts. How is she doing? :unsure:

Well, the sales will not increase (rapidly, anyway) until "Obsessed" blows up on Pop (Top 40 Mainstream) radio. Here are the most up to date positions on radio:

 

#43 Pop (+206 spin increase)

#16 Urban (+369 spin increase)

#12 Rhythmic (+470 spin increase)

#32 Urban AC (+37 spin increase)

 

This is over a 7-day period and does not include today's update.

It's gaining hard on Urban & Rhythmic formats, and is starting to take off on Pop. As shown in recent months, Pop tend to be more accepting of a track once it's a secured hit on Urban or Rhythmic (i.e. "Blame It", "Knock You Down", "Best I Ever Had" etc.). It's really taking off, so I wouldn't panic yet :)

I keep listenin to the Hate U demo, it sounds amazing after a few listens. Love the "today I'm gonna get over you" parts.

I don't think this album is going to be one of her big sellers by any means but by the sounds of things (little anticipation, pushed back etc.) it may become one of those fan-favourites, a-la Butterfly. :wub:

I think it'll be a consistent seller. It might 'only' debut with 250k or so but it'll sell far more consistently than E=MC2 and H.A.T.E. U sounds strong enough to keep it selling over Christmas which is when sales really count. :D

I'm quite annoyed the album is delayed, but at least the VMA's should help it reach #1. :D

Highly unlikely up against the much anticipated Jay-Z album. :(

Now I've seen the size of 'Run This Town' I have to concede that the #1 album is rather unlikely. Still, it's sales that matter and having the #1 album isn't the same as having a #1 single in terms of prestige (to me at least).

Run This Town IS immense...

 

Has everybody read the review from the listening party? Mariah HAS covered I Wanna Know What Love Is and apparently she KILLS IT. I wasn't sure about this at first, but aslong as it's kept as an album track it should be alright, dying to hear it though! The reviewers said the first 4 tracks on the album sound like smash hit singles waiting to happen and marked H.A.T.E.U. as a highlight. Excitement please! :w00t: For me it's like Whitney and Mariah are jostling for position in the excitement stakes. :lol: The winner will be the one who leaks first. :kink:

I'm quite sure that Whitney will get her leak on a good week or two before Mariah :P To be honest, Obsessed is far better than I Look To You. I'm excited for Mill $ Bill but they're taking so long with it! I think Memoirs will be a far better (less dated) album ultimately.

Mariah is usually good with leaks, compared to other artists.

I'm a little skeptical of her covering "I Wanna Know What Love Is". It's seriously my most hated song of all time. I have no idea why, as there are a lot of similar songs from around this era that I like, but it's just so cringeworthy. But hey, if anyone can change my opinion of a track, it's MC. ^_^

H.A.T.E. U needs to leak first, I'm anticipating this the most.
