May 22, 200916 yr I also love the songs he sang at the Burns supper, his accent and his perfection of it. Tio cghange the subject lasst night I watched the film for the first time of P
May 22, 200916 yr Sorry it jumped. I was saying last night I watched for the first time the film of phantom of the opera. The phantom was played by another scottish actor Gerard B utler. I have to say his voice is nowhere near as good as Darius and i could see D in this part. It sounded to me like Gerard was assisted on some notes.
May 22, 200916 yr I couldn't watch that all the way through when I saw it a year or two ago, because I was really disappointed in Gerard Butler's performance. I'm not sure if Gerard Butler has any background in music but I wasn't bowled over by his acting in it either. This morning I saw a version of Jane Eyre I'd never seen before with Timothy Dalton as Mr Rochester. He wasn't bad and for the first time I could see why he might have been cast as Bond. Nevertheless I just kept thinking Darius could have done more with the part. For a start, unlike Mr Dalton, he'd keep the accent up flawlessly throughout. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a Mr Rochester who seemed spot on. The worst in my opinion was George C Scott, maybe because he was such a perfect General Patten. Darius has a real talent for effectively carrying through dramatic changes in a character's personality without it ever looking disjointed. He did it with Sky and so much more deeply in the role of Rhett. The flawed galant hero is definitely his forte.
May 22, 200916 yr But the fact that iot is sp consistant makes some people feel it's not really acting. The lad can't win.
May 22, 200916 yr  I have, megham. I really have. I did understand what you were saying. Because it looks so smooth, people think he's just lucky that he is the perfect match for the part and don't give him due credit for the complexity that it demands. He's absolutely focused and he makes it look so easy. I remember Jill being impressed that there was always something going on behnd Darius's eyes every moment he was on stage.
May 22, 200916 yr He was wondering when he was going to get something to eat. Then came the picnic scene and there he was eating.
May 22, 200916 yr Am goin g to see Gilbert and sullivans The Gondoliers this week and have booked to see Hello Dolly and Evita later this year. Also booked go see Glyn Kerslake my local singer who has appeared in the west end in the lead in sunset boulevard, Miss saigon, Phantom les miserables etc etc. He is appearing with Shona lindsey also appeared in the westend in numerous leading roles. We have a small theatre here converted from a church as well as two other theatres so am lucky as we have very strong amateurs in this area who have gone on to bigger things. Sunday last the local dance studio where my grand daughter is learning dance put on a concert of dance of winners fron the south west of england festival which is also big and it was amazing, there was ballet, tap,. modern dance, national group and they introduced a former young pupil who is now principal dancer with the Royal ballet so the standard generally is exceptionally high. Hope i havent bored you but I do love my theatre.
May 23, 200916 yr We have Woking and Kingston not far away but I can get to the West End in the same amount of time and I do like London.
May 23, 200916 yr There seem to be so many reminders of Darius just now. Late last night flicking channels, I caught Aces High, a film based on Journey's End, a hard hitting anti-war play which Darius performed in Edinburgh in his student days. I can't find my Chicago brochures anywhere. Does anyone know if it says which part Darius played? Edited May 23, 200916 yr by Baytree
May 23, 200916 yr It doesn't say, BT.just that as a student (presumably at school) he played lead roles in Oliver, Journey's End and West Side Story. At Edinburgh he played in Some Like It Hot, and as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet.
May 23, 200916 yr Thanks, Bramley. Student can cover school or university, I suppose. I'd be really impressed if a school could put on Journey's End. It's a very serious play. The 3 main leads in it are all very complex, pretty screwed up people, really. However, I seem to recall "The Diary of Anne Frank" being another non-musical production Darius was involved in. Maybe there just happened to be a group of talented kids at the same time in the senior years.
May 23, 200916 yr At the moment, I'd just love to see Darius performing. I'd carefully avoided 'Chicago' for years and then, after finally being forced to watch it because D was in it, found I liked it. That started me going to the theatre again. I'd probably risk most things he did just because I've enjoyed what I've seen him do.
