Well, I don't know if any of you know this or not but Jermaine Dupri has left IDJ because of a big run in with L.A Reid apparently.

This somewhat worries me for a few reasons:

1. Jermaine Dupri is Mariah's favourite collaborator and now with him gone from IDJ, will she not want to be loyal and follow him?

2. L.A Reid championed Mariah and produced both Mimi and E=MC2, the latter not being that successful, will he cut his losses?

So what do we think? Do you think Mariah will leave Def Jam and follow JD? I, for one, hope she doesn't. They've given her a great platform to work on and creative freedom that she had at no other label she's been on. Plus I don't think it would do her any harm (at all) to find somebody else to collaborate with, as much as I love the JD stuff, some of the tracks taken from E=MC2 could have slotted straight into Mimi because they're so similar in style and production, because most of what she does is produced by JD. I think it COULD help her explore new areas and work with some new and exciting people if she strays from JD...

Thoughts?

I kinda hope she follows JD, either she doesn't care too much about promotion or her current label aren't too good at it. Rihanna is their main star at the moment, she's young, everyone loves her etc. Maybe Mariah would be better off somewhere else. I hope she does work with JD again, they've done some great songs together but she had better on E=MC².

Agreed on the Rihanna bit.

Although when you look at the promotion for Mimi - she was EVERYWHERE. You couldn't get away from her, and she actually made separate appearances travelling back and forth to the UK to promote EVERY single (bar Say Something) and did various performances on various shows etc. When this project began I really had high hopes because once again she was everywhere, you couldn't escape her. Then once the album went to #1 and TMB went to #1, they just seemed to lose interest. I recall seeing one or two performances for Bye Bye and that was the project officially over. I don't know whether IDJ or Mariah is to blame for that to be honest...

Ah yes, I'd guess it was probably down to Mariah then. It was good that she did Sunday Night Project/T4/Paul O'Grady etc. for the first single and album but it went quiet after that...around when she got married. I think the fact that she decided to promote "I Stay In Love" even though it was a dead era shows that it was probably her decisions and that the label are willing to get her promo when it's necessary.

I think the record label that Mariah is with is aiming at a much younger market now and so older artists like Mariah aren't the top concern. I think she should leave as well. Maybe move to.... EMI?

EMI are notoriously terrible. Plus isn't it now known as Virgin EMI? She's been with Virgin before, and was paid to leave. :heehee:

The place where Mariah belongs is Sony. I can't really see her on any other record label. And since she got paid to leave Virgin there are only 2 options. Waner Brothers and Sony

But Mariah has always claimed that she's happier at IDJ because she was complete creative freedom unlike her other 2 labels. Would you really say she belonged at Sony giving her always saying the above?

Personally, I would like her to stay with Def Jam, stop with all of the JD collaborations (a few is fine, but the best part of an album is very "heard it all before" by now), stop rubbing her husband in our faces, knuckle down, record some amazing tracks and actually be arsed to promote it.

Like you said before though, her ex husband is no longer in Sony anymore. I think that she'll be less restricted to what she can do. Because I think her Ex forced her to keep a "white image". But now that he's gone she can be any image she wants. She does try at Universal especially with things like Mimi and a few tracks from E=MC2, but Universal doesn't look like they give a b*ggers to$$ really

Mariah is the most successful artist on def jam.. why leaving? she sold 8 million albums just with her def jam albums in the US.. Her SONY released records this century: Greatest Hits (1.1m) REmixes (0.260m) and Ballads (0.05m) have done really been successes..

and not to mention Virgin: Glitter (0.6m).

+ Mariahs digital singles sold amazingly well too

only Def Jam releases: 4.500.000 digital singles. (+1.3m for AIWFCIY)

Mariahs total record sales 00's: 30.000.000 (21.000.000 albums and 9.000.000 singles)

I'm in full agreement with your comment regarding moving away from Jermaine. I think Mariah and IDJ have listened to the critisisms of her last record, as he's not going to have half the amount of input on this album. I think it's a smart move, as it seems they're really pushing for a successful era. I mean, her last album wasn't a failure by any means, and this is why they're working hard on trying to keep her fresh.

I think it's a good move that she's with IDJ. They're seemingly investing a lot in her, and rightfully so.
