Posted January 22, 200916 yr Hope nobody thinks I'm stealing their job here, but I recently found an interesting chart, called the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart. It's not the official Japanese chart - that's Oricon - but it shows many more entries by Western acts than Oricon. So I thought i'd look through it and pick out the western hits. There's a weird mix of superstars and nobodies, but it makes for a good read. Have a look... Western Acts In The Billboard Japan Hot 100 (issue date 23/01/09) This week/(last week)/Artist/Title/position in the overall chart 1 2 NATTY Badman (5) 2 1 JONAS BROTHERS When You Look Me In The Eye (6) 3 7 (TERIYAKI BOYZ Feat.) January 22, 200916 yr Author I think it's airplay and physicals. From what I read it doesn't include downloads.
January 22, 200916 yr hmm I though the Billboard chart over there includes digital sales too
January 23, 200916 yr  Sorry to ask a question but does Japan have a seperate chart for Japanese and Non-Japanese artists. Its a very interesting chart. Shocked with the amount of Uk artists nearly has much has the US didnt expect that. The Japanese love Alesha believe it or not "lipstick" was a hit there. Thanks for posting.
January 23, 200916 yr Author Lipstick? Really? Wow. Oricon used to have a western artists chart in the 80s and 90s, but I don't think it does anymore. So I've done the best I can here. You're right, there does seem to be a big US influence here, but also things you wouldn't expect to see like Lily Allen and Alesha, and then nobodies like Jason Champion!
January 23, 200916 yr Interesting chart. I'm always skeptical when I hear people say "x was a hit in japan!" because I hardly ever see any Western acts on the Oricon. Yet then those same Western acts tour Japan and huge crowds show up. The only song I can think of that really did seem a huge Japanese hit was "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne.
January 23, 200916 yr Oricon chart is still based only on physical sales. Billboard chart it's a mix of airplay and physical sales. Both charts don't take into account digital sales.
January 23, 200916 yr Author Thanks for the info Fresh. Funny, because apparently Japan is the biggest market in the world for legal downloading... Interesting chart. Yet then those same Western acts tour Japan and huge crowds show up. The only song I can think of that really did seem a huge Japanese hit was "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne. I know what you mean. I don't think the Oricon chart is a good measure of popularity in Japan. The other Japanese chart worth following IMO is the Tokio Hot 100. It's airplay only (I think?) but it shows an interesting mix with lots of western artists: link. Do you want me to go through this and pick out the westeners?

I love that coldplay vid for life in technicolour. I heard a rumour once that shampoo use to be big in Japan.

Cor I thought Trouble was a number 1 there. Sales of album were good though and the E.P. Thanks for posting. They did a good cover of a waitresses song also. Japan seems to like kitschy stuff which I love.
January 29, 200916 yr Author Trouble may have been number one on the international charts. Whenever you hear a western artist was number one in Japan, it usually means that. Yes Japan has quite kitsch taste, which is probably why I love it too :)

February 13, 200916 yr I havent ever heard of Jason Champion but the tune is ok is he british? Yuck at The View doing so well with that $h!t tune, "Same Jeans" was ok only one I liked by them. :puke2: Mc$h!te I hope they arent big in japan. On a random note I wonder if Alphaville's great "Big in Japan" was actually big in Japan.
