Pink breaks record with 12th show announced

JOHN Farnham clocked up so many sold-out shows at the Rod Laver Arena they named a room after him backstage.

But they may have to rename the whole place for the apparently unstoppable phenomenon that is American pop star Pink.

Pink will today announce a record 12th show at the venue for Tuesday, July 14. She will now play to more than 150,000 Melburnians and more than 430,000 Australians on her Funhouse tour.

The shows are named after her recently released blockbuster-selling album.

Her first show on the local leg of the Funhouse tour is May 22, and she does not finish her Australian commitments until August 11, almost three months later.

The success of the tour, which now boasts an incredible 43 show dates, flies in the face of the talk of economic downturns and the depreciating Australian dollar.

The feisty star has delivered huge album and concert ticket sales thanks to her highly appealing mix of rock and pop. Her last tour of Australia, in 2007, sold a then unthinkably huge 300,000 tickets.

The Funhouse album is at No.2 on the ARIA charts and sold an impressive 10,118 copies last week.

Since its release in October, it has racked up 454,778 sales. It was the second-biggest selling album of the year, behind Kings of Leon.

Her single, Sober, was the most played song on Australian commercial radio last week, receiving 146 spins on Nova's national network.

Australia is by far Pink's biggest market. Tellingly, she is yet to announce US tour dates, where her album has not reached 1 million copies sold.

In November 2003, Farnham performed nine shows at Rod Laver Arena, announcing a further three shows, which were held the following June.

Pink is edging closer to a venue record in Sydney and has smashed her own ticket sales record in Brisbane.
