Lily Allen - The Fear

So we have this odd situation: number 1 on itunes but only #168 in the official chart.

Are there some sales excluded or did The Fear sold only so much that it could only reacj number 168 after 2 days of download sales?

The physicals will still chart! I’d imagine that it was CD leakages that got to #168. However the downloads will most likely be excluded as the single has been given away for free on a digital format…

That was only the video though. I'm not going to lie, i'm quite confused by it. I think she will chart this week either way,k physicals and other sites apart from iTunes (I think it would only be there where sales were excluded) will get her into the top 3.

The global icon Lily Allen entered at #168 with The Fear, with 1,142 sales.

Surely that can't be right for Lily? She was #1 on iTunes on Saturday wasn't she?

How could she have been #1 on iTunes with sales *that* low, though?

Having said that - 1,142 is pretty respectable for #168... :)

I'm quite sure some sales were excluded.

Don't know why, but some sales are missing.

Perhaps only EP download counted?

Perhaps only Friday sales counted? Technically error at iTunes? You never know as it's happened on midweeks before.

Don't think it's disqualified otherwise it would not of charted.

no it was the video that was given away for free for 1 day on itunes.

and why would the record company do that if it would stop the downloads from counting. I think she will be number 1 come sunday, even if she isn't no1 during the midweeks.

Such a shame if they don't let her chart properly and get into number 1!

Coldplay's Violet Hill was free for one day (or one week?) so it couldn't chart the first week but after that it could. Viva La Vida was a different story again: the single version couldn't chart but the album version could and went number 1 on the official chart.

I'm confused sometimes with this exclusion rule

It'd be a shame if it can't chart. It's grown on me and deserves its number one status! 'Just Dance' is fab but c'mon I've had that song on my ipod since August!!

Very odd though why she wasn't at least top 40. Could it be because people were downloading it from an EP which isn't released until today?

1.1k would still be far too low for the sales from all the other download sites too! ;)

The quagmire of digital age chart eligibility!

It seems certain all the download sales were excluded last week. For one week or until the album version appears online?

The OCC’s rules seem to point to the latter and the Ting Ting’s Great DJ single remained ineligible to chart even when they started charging people for it!

On the other hand remember when Viva La Vida was still excluded on the Sunday after VLVADAAHF had been released midweek because they couldn’t differentiate between the album and NCQ’d new edit sales? Then again there was a format change that facilitated its inclusion in the end.

Either way it’ll make tomorrows mids very interesting reading!

I disagree.

How do you account for the 1,142 sales if you exclude all downloads?

Maybe it just didn't sell enough.

Violet Hill slipped through a loophole by being given away on the bands website and not on a chart reporting website like iTunes or 7 digital.

Viva La Vida was still excluded from the singles chart the same Sunday the album entered at No1.

I disagree.

Physical CD leaks...

perhaps itunes downloads were considerably low during Saturday so it didn't need to sell much to get to the top. I'm 99.99999% sure it will be number 1 by sunday. the 0.00001% is that maybe someone will beat it to #1.
Physical CD leaks...

That would be an exceptionally high physical leak figure wouldn't it? And no Woolworths to leak them anymore.

Not really, I saw it in several music stores on Saturday...

Let’s put it another way. Lady GaGa sold 74k last week, so if we say she averaged 6k a day on iTunes last week (it was probably more)...

Then for Lily to have been iTunes No1 on Saturday she must have matched or exceeded that so lets say she sold 3k on Friday and 6k on Saturday that’s 9k of missing sales from iTunes.

iTunes may have the lions share of the UK download but it’s not got a 90% share of the market yet! So you can't account for the 1,142 sales with 'other download sites' either.

My local HMV has new physical singles on sale from Sunday morning. It has done since Woolworths was in trouble (end of November/beginning of December).

As I never go into town Saturday afternoon who knows if some stores put their new stock out late on Saturday afternoon ready for opening on Sunday & some punters can't believe their luck and grab a copy early.....

Okay, maybe this downloads don't count is the explanation. In which case Lily is unlikely to be #1 this coming week.
