Just ambling here tonight. But in another thread a poster threw in the word 'classic' and it got me to wondering. Is there an album in your distant past that at the time, you and everyone around you thought was a 'classic' and still to this day is regarded a 'classic' and yet you've listened to it lately and thought ... WTF was I thinking ... its crap!

I ask this because ... and please don't shout ... both me and my husband have been listening to albums together (usually on a long drive) and we've both come to the conclusion that we must have been on drugs the first time (and yet I don't remember smoking a joint until long after we started going out!) Recently we've listened to Dark Side of the Moon and Tubular Bells and thought .... 'bloody hell'. I was going to buy my husband Wishbone Ash's Argus on CD (as this was his ultimate favourite) but god knows what he'd make of it now .... probably an ashtray!

The only old stuff I've got that I never tire of now is The Beatles and ELO!

A great concept for a thread.

Personally Dark Side Of The Moon makes more sense to me the older I get, but I always thought Tubular Bells was a dodgy album.

My nominations for Classic Albums that are the Emperor's New clothes would also include: Van Morrison - Astral Weeks & Love - Forever Changes and to my ears the always awful Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell.

D'you know ... I would say that one of the criteria that an album should meet in order to be considered a 'classic' should be 'do you skip any tracks when listening' If the answer is NO then the album is 100% Classic! For me there are only two albums that meet this and they are The Beatles' Revolver and ELO's A New World Record.

I think that's a bit too kinda if you ask me. There are plenty of albums I've bought recently where I wouldn't want to skip past any tracks yet I'd hardly call the latest albums by Estelle, Brandy, Beverley Knight or Lady GaGa classics.

I can't really comment on this topic in any other way though, I don't think I've listened to any of the albums considered classics.

I think you're right! I was being too kind. If you don't skip any tracks then it is half-way there!

i think 'classic' is a word banded about too easily, too often.

i too never tire of the beatles albums, and i never liked 'bat out of hell' although i could understand the appeal...... totally unlike 'dark side of the moon' which i never 'got', never understood, never saw the appeal... and whilst i couldnt argue against others liking it, i never got or will 'get'.

i liked tubular bells then, and i still like it now, although oldfields other albums were very second rate.

Personally Dark Side Of The Moon makes more sense to me the older I get, but I always thought Tubular Bells was a dodgy album.

Agree.. I think "Dark Side of the Moon" is an album you kind of get more as you get older... As a young man I liked the music itself and me and my mates did the whole 'sit round listening to Pink Floyd with a bong' thing when we were about 18/19/20, terribly cliched.... . But now in my 30s the lyrics start having more resonance with me, particularly stuff like "Us and Them".... The only time I ever seemed to like Tubular Bells was when it was used on "The Exorcist".....

There's certainly a few "WTF was I thinking....?" moments for me....

Stone Temple Pilots - Core - god what Yank RAWK rubbish, the 'corporate' face of Grunge, but for some reason I liked it at the time.....

The Orb - Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld - It's probably a bit unfair to include this, some of it is still great, but when I tried listening to it again recently, I just found myself losing patience with a few of the tracks tbh.... Again, great at the time and a lot of good memories, but now, not so for me

Pink Floyd - The Wall - Again, as a young man, I loved this, but listening to it now, it just sounds bloated, pretentious and rather cheesy..... The Floyd albums that for me still hold up are more the stuff like "Dark Side..." and "Wish You Were Here", also the Syd Barrett stuff still sounds pretty spaced out....

Radiohead - Pablo Honey - Absolutely RAVED about this at the time, but, really, considering the band they became, this is just whiny indie haircut bollocks, as artists they just completely outgrew this, and it does sound embarrassing and amateurish now; and you still get r*t**** who shout out for "Creep" at every bloody gig.... MOVE ON GUYS, THEY AINT GONNA PLAY IT.....
