Question:

Wouldnt it just be better (and more profitable) to have a completely new original song as the single rather than a cover???

Cos then more than half of the profits etc will go to Depeche Mode for royalties and the writers/producers/mixers etc... Especially now that 95% of the charts sales are downloads (which only cost 79p) and barely anyone buys the 4 quid cd, hardly any money is going to be made for the charity...

This is just a quick random thought after something weve been learning about in media...

well I dont know how old are u, but it looks like u have borned in 70's so u have grown up will all those HOT acts of 80's and I understand that is hard for u to accept 00's...but still here are a lot of people who are 20 years younger then you and of course they choose to be fans of this decade artists and Im sure they cannot listen to Human League or Depeche Mode.

So, er, why, exactly, are SOOOOOO many of these "hot" new acts from the 00s doing 80s cover versions then....? Or sampling 80s acts....? I mean, sorry, but your post has no logic whatsoever.....

As for DM, well, they are still recording music, so they ARE as relevant to the 00s as anyone else recording music these days..... The likes of Chris and Katherine are both TEENAGERS, yet, they totally love the music of DM older stuff and the newer..... So, DM are very far from only recording music for us oldies to listen to.......

Depeche Mode are every bit as relevant to the music scene now than they ever were.....

I think thats more to do with the cultural capital and upbringing of some people. My dad brought me up listening to REM and U2 and Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode which im glad he did.. (I may not have the BEST taste in music but i have probably the most diverse)

You have a point... Although, one would like to think that Vince Clark (as it has been established that 'JCGE' is his song rather than Gahan/Gore's) would actually waive the royalties seeing as how it's for charidee.....

Well, my folks gave me an appreciation for Bowie, The Doors and Hendrix (in fact, my parents often joked that I was either conceived during the '71 Isle of Wight festival or was a foetus. I was born in Feb '72..... )... So there you go.....

I would love to think that while developing as a foetus in the womb I was kind of "there" in spirit when the likes of Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix took the stage...... Would sure as hell explain a LOT......

That is what has happenned in the past.

Of course these veteran artists have then capitalised on this by releasing Best Of compiliations at the same time. (Coughs: 2009 Erasure 40 Pop Hits).

 Im pretty sure that noone really wants to admit to taking money from a charitable fund but im sure there are some behind the scene ethical issues about royalties etc.

Oh god, definatly. Most of for the sake of the charity if not anything else such as the fact that the original is tat and even as a Saturdays fan, im not over the moon that they're covering this.

Well, DM did theirs about 18 months ago... Highly unlikely they'd do so now......

Vince Clark has more to gain out of this than DM do.... I really DONT think that DM given the sort of sophisticated material they're known for now really particulary wish to be reminded of totally cheesy synth pop fluff from the early 80s.... As artists they've outgrown this sort of thing, just as Radiohead outgrew "Creep".....

Im not sure if i 100% believe in the whole "listening to music from the womb" thing... I was born in Portugal and my dad provided a lot of the music for the locals, including when my mum was pregnant with me and she was usually with him at his "shows" (as he calls it ) and i "listened" to a lot of portuguese music but right now at this very moment i dont feel very appreciative of portuguese music.. Ive mainly stuck to the music that my dad played after birth (hence the pink floyd, REM etc list above)

Mind you I read only yesterday that DM may be doing a special collaboration with Kelly Clarkson (OK at least she is far more talented than the SaTurdays (as they have been nicknamed in some quarters of the industry), at the Annual German Music Awards in February as well as both their respective new singles. As when Kelly was over in the UK 2/3 weeks ago she spent half a day at DM's UK studio.

Presumably they might do a live version of this popular mash-up of a DM & KC classic.

Straying Off topic: Mind you I was spooked to find that my All Time Favourite Song (David Bowie - Life On Mars) was recorded on the day I was born!

:o I HAVE NOT HEARD OF THAT?! Do you have a link to source?

Well, you said it yourself, Kelly Clarkson is more talented than the Shats..... She can at least come up with her own material, and showed some considerable strength of will to tell her producers to basically "fukk off" when they tried to get her to do some R&B sh!t instead of the more Carol Decker-esque "rock chick" route she wanted to take.... Not a big fan of KC, but at she at least gets my respect for sticking to her guns.... Depending on the material, I could actually see a KC and Dave Gahan (or Martin Gore...) duet working in some ways.... It would be potentially interesting....

Yep, it really does seem that everyone wants a piece of the DM pie......  I fully expect Lady Ga Ga to be on the blower to Dave Gahan at some point......

Im not sure if i 100% believe in the whole "listening to music from the womb" thing...

Nah, me neither really, it's just an anecdote..... But in some ways, it kind of makes sense.... The fact that I responded so readily to The Doors, The Who and Hendrix..... Makes you wonder.....

Oh yeah no doubt about it.. I wasnt discouraging your anecdote just my take on the parent books telling parents to play music to their kids... If it does work, you have to wonder what tripe the parents of chavs mustve played

Extra cool points for you guys

Oh, I think that definitely has an impact, unfortunately I grew up listening to my mum's tastes (Whitney Houston, Gabrielle, Robson & Jerome, various love albums featuring the likes of Bonnie Tyler, T'Pau, Sinead O'Connor, Gloria Gaynor etc.) rather than my dad's less embarrassing stuff. (Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Madness, R.E.M. etc.) So now I still have a huge bias towards females and don't rate Rock or Britpop very highly. Things could have been so different....

Anyway, on the subject of the Saturdays, I think they'll do a decent version of it. I don't think I'll like it as much as this version:

Wallis Bird - Just Can't Get Enough

the fact that the original is tat and even as a Saturdays fan, im not over the moon that they're covering this.

fact? For whom?

The fact here is... even a $h!t Depeche Mode song is a million times more musically worthy and accomplished than anything the Saturdays could foist on us.... tat indeed
