Posted January 30, 200916 yr Hi, I just wanted to let you know about a couple of R&B classics being reissued and released by Collectors’ Choice on March 10th. The first is a various artist package that includes Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, the Falcons and many more. It’s called “Apollo Saturday Night”. The second release is a classic Sam & Dave album; an album that you may not have even known existed! Here’s the story on both: Artist: Various Title: Apollo Saturday Night Ya wanna know what a Saturday night at the Apollo was really like back in the heyday? Well, bend an ear to this Collectors’ Choice Music exclusive! It was nights like these that made the Apollo one of the most famous clubs in the world: six of the biggest soul acts in the biz leavin’ it all on stage up in Harlem, with King Coleman the urbane host (he changed into a new outfit before every act). Check out this line-up: You’re So Fine; Alabama Bound Falcons; Pain in My Heart; These Arms of Mine Otis Redding (listen to one of the young females in the audience answer “Right here” to Otis’ plaintive “Where can my baby be?” in the first song!); Misty; Say Yeah Doris Troy (herself a one-time Apollo usherette); Rockin’ Chair; Walkin’ the Dog Rufus Thomas; T’ain’t Nothin’ to Me; Speedo’s Back in Town Coasters, and Groovin’; Don’t Play That Song, and Stand by Me from headliner Ben E. King. But this is all just preparation for the grand finale, a round-robin version from all of the acts of Ray Charles’ What’d I Say, as another unforgettable Saturday night at the Apollo comes to a glorious end. And we got it all on tape...out March 10th! Artist: SAM & DAVE Title: Sam & Dave This little-known 1966 album is actually a key collection from the career of this all-time great soul duo, as it collects the A and B-sides of all six singles Sam & Dave cut for Roulette from 1962–1964, right BEFORE they went on to achieve fame at Stax and then, later, Atlantic! Some of these were produced by legendary producer Steve Alaimo, and Sam Moore claimed that Jackie Wilson appears uncredited as a backup singer, too. Famous collaborators, aside, though, this is vintage Sam & Dave, with Dave Prater taking most of the lead vocals (as opposed to the stuff on Stax). Includes It Feels So Nice; I Got a Thing Going On; My Love Belongs to You; Listening for My Name; No More Pain; I Found Out; It Was So Nice While It Lasted; You Ain’t No Big Thing Baby; I Need Love; She’s Alright; Keep A-Walkin’, and If She’ll Still Have Me. A great ’n’ gritty soul exclusive from Collectors’ Choice Music! These and all Collectors’ Choice CD’s are available at ccmusic.com.
