Posted February 4, 200916 yr UK ministers must answer allegations that Britain was complicit in torture, a senior Conservative MP has said. David Davis said a High Court ruling on Wednesday alleged that Binyam Mohamed, a UK resident held in the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba, had been tortured. The judges also said the US threatened to withdraw intelligence help from the UK if details were released. But Foreign Secretary David Miliband said there had been no such threat and the UK "never condoned torture". "There has been no threat from the US to break off intelligence co-operation," he said. He stressed that the US-UK security relationship was built on trust and that depended on intelligence remaining confidential. The judges said the UK's attorney general has begun a criminal investigation into possible torture against Mr Mohamed. Investigation Lord Justice Thomas and Mr Justice Lloyd Jones said the attorney general would be investigating the issues of "torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment". The judges said they wanted the full details of the alleged torture to be published in the interests of safeguarding the rule of law, free speech and democratic accountability. But they had been persuaded that it was not in the public interest to publish those details as the US government could then "inflict on the citizens of the United Kingdom a very considerable increase in the dangers they face at a time when a serious terrorist threat still pertains". These details were a summary of a report by the US government to the British security services about the detention and treatment of the individual concerned which amounted to 25 lines. No 10 said it was not aware of any threat from the US government to withdraw intelligence co-operation with Britain if details of the case were revealed. rest of story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7870049.stm

Christ.... And here was me thinking this guy might be an improvement on Dubya..... Didn't take long for him to become a bit of w/anker did it.....? <_< But you just know that the meeeedjaaahhhhhhh who sucked his dick throughout the whole election campaign are sure as hell not gonna be nearly as critical of him as they were about Dubya...... <_<
February 5, 200916 yr Where does it state that any threats supposedly made by the US government were after the inauguration of the new President on 20th January? Quote Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, said the Bush administration had tried "to bully" the British courts .............. Edited February 5, 200916 yr by Baytree
February 5, 200916 yr Christ.... <_< Who knows what to expect from the Messiah St. Obama Luther-King Christ? I can't recall ever reading about his policies for America, or his plans for the country, except the word "change". At least the Republicans actually expressed their views (Sarah Palin  ), I honestly do think Obama only got in because of his colour.
February 5, 200916 yr Obama's policies were plastered across every form of media for months. I don't know how anybody missed them. I doubt he got in because of his color. It was either another 4/8 years of Republicanism where the citizens of America get f***ed about AGAIN, or 4/8 years of Democratic leadership where change is priority. Bush was the worst president the States EVER had. The country was in a shambles and Obama was the only hope left. McCain would have kicked it during his time in office, so Palin would have been president which is possibly the scariest thing that would have ever happened. She didn't even know some of the policies she was supposedly "supporting". I agree with Baytree on this one. These "threats" were made before inauguration by the BUSH administration. -_- If you read the full article on the BBC site which the OP has linked to, you'll see this: Mr Davis said it appeared the Bush administration had "threatened" the UK government about the repercussions should details of the case be made public. .... He said Mr Miliband must explain why this had happened and whether the new Obama administration supported its predecessor's stance on the issue
February 6, 200916 yr I agree with Baytree on this one. These "threats" were made before inauguration by the BUSH administration. -_- If you read the full article on the BBC site which the OP has linked to, you'll see this: makes no difference.... obama has endorsed them and its obama who has now re-itterated the threats.
February 6, 200916 yr makes no difference.... obama has endorsed them and its obama who has now re-itterated the threats. Yep... Obama has not actually distanced himself from this, nor retracted the threats or criticised Bush for making them, therefore, the criticism of the action is still valid.... It is utterly irrelevant if it was originally Bush, Obama appears to be backing them up, so merely waffling about it being "Bush" isn't going to wash with me.... Bush isn't there anymore, how can Obama or the Media continue to blame him for things that Obama can easily reverse... Yes, some things done by the Bush admin will take a long time to rectify, but a petty threat made against an ally, is something that can be easily rectified with a phone call saying "I dont go along with what my predecessor said....".
February 6, 200916 yr Obama hasn't endorsed anything. And where has he reiterated the threat? His stance is unknown. So he could go against it for all we know, which is most likely. Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, said the Bush administration had tried "to bully" the British courts and President Obama must make it clear he would not do the same. One of his foreign policies states he will strengthen alliances and partnership. He wouldn't jeopardize one of his main foreign policies over something the Bush Administration endorsed.
