Green Day have confirmed that their eighth studio album will be titled 21st Century Breakdown.

The American punk act's long-awaited follow-up to 2004's American Idiot will be released in May, reports NME.

Produced by Garbage drummer Butch Vig, the record is split into three acts - 'Heroes And Cons', 'Charlatans And Saints' and 'Horseshoes And Handgrenades'.

American fans can pre-order the new disc now.

Green Day presented the Album Of The Year award to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss at last night's Grammys.

From the names of those acts it seems they are still taking themselves far to seriously.

Green Day Talks Politics On 21st Century Breakdown

Green Day's next album has a title. The group is planning to call the follow up to "American Idiot" "21st Century Breakdown." Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong tells Rolling Stone that the album deals with his own misgivings about politicians. The singer cautions against being overly optimistic with the election of new President Barack Obama. He notes, quote, "Don't look at this guy as the answer to our prayers. You still need to be involved." Green Day tapped Butch Vig to produce the album, which contains a narration that centers on two characters named Gloria and Christian. The band is currently putting the finishing touches on the disc, which is expected to be released in May.
