This former child star singer/actress was the most commercially successful female singer in British chart history.

Some Other Key Songs (I can't find a decent non Embedding disabled version of Don't Sleep In The Subway anywhere!):

Sailor (1961 UK#1)

I Know A Place (1965 UK#17 USA#3)

My Love (1966 UK#4 USA#1)

This Is My Song (1967 UK#1 USA#3)

Where any of you fans of "The original Baby Spice", or did you find her music to clean cut and wholesome for your liking?

count me in!

yep i was/am a fan of the original baby spice! but the tracks i prefered tended to be her lesser known hits...so 'this is my song' and 'downtown' didnt figure too highly.

'colour my world'

'the other mans grass'

'dont sleep in the subway'

'i know a place'

'i couldnt live without your love'

but in reality i only know her post 'downtown' material, which was effectively the second half of her career having hits from the 50's onwards.

I love Petula. I'm not very familiar with her early recordings either, but what I've heard was OK. She's best in French though - she really rocks out on songs like Donne-Moi Des Fleurs, le Coeur Qui Bat (covered by Mid-West garage heroes The Remains!) and Un Jeune Homme Bien (the Kinks' Well Respected Man no less!) She even made a couple of decent synth-pop records (Mr. Orwell and Glamoureuse) with Celine Dion producer Luc Plamondon...

My husband loves her! I remember in a quiz one night the deciding question was something like who was the most commercially successful female singer. My husband whispered 'it's Petula Clark' ... to which we all guffawed and laughed and told him to go back to his pint of mild. If we'd have listened to him we'd have won £50 - which was a lot of money 15 years ago ... I suppose its a lot of money now!

She had a good singing voice, not a huge fan as such but I did like a few of the ones already mentioned.

I have a soft spot for Pet Clark and I love all the tracks you mention, especially Downtown.
