Led by Punk's answer to Lennon & McCartney, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones band quickly out grew the Punk movement and developed into a great alternative/rock band over into the early 1980s.

Do you rate The Clash highly, or do you think they should be held to blame for the crimes of U2, Green Day, Pete Doherty & Lily Allen?

The Clash = essential to everything in music.

That whole "America has changed them is bollocks" - what hasn't America changed for British artists - case in point George Michael.

I do think that they are also responsible for Glasvegas too - the lead singer looks exactly like Joe Strummer. :o

Best punk band ever, a very key band in the history of music in my opinon, for every Green Day inspired by them there is a Rancid.

There would be no musical development in punk without The Clash.

agreed a very key band in the history of music and development....to a degree... punk evolved with the clash and would have done albeit poorer without. dont forget johnny with PIL steered a ground breaking course, and other acts also took on the punk ethic of 'do it, why not' ie innovation. siouxsie is another example of how punk evolved and inspired, in fact not only was she the accidental godmother of 'goth' but arguably the godmother for the style adopted by 'indie' too with many early bands citing her as inspiration..

so yes the clash were a key player who added to the evolution in our music, but they werent alone.

LOVED The Clash

Faves include : Guns of Brixton, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, White Riot, Train In Vain, Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, I Fought The Law

Was gutted when Joe Strummer died

White Riot, Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, I Fought The Law and London's Calling were my stand out tracks. Essential listening to see how a band can develop through the years.
