Morrissey has spoken of his distress at the current state of the music industry, describing it as "boring".

The former Smiths frontman was speaking to Ian Camfield for Xfm when he criticised the lack of individualism in today's stars.

Morrissey said: "I think everyone is quite boring in music. I can't see any voices who are taking the plunge and risking anything.

"They're padding down the plank and everyone's just lining up and accepting awards. It's very, very difficult for me and very distressing. I can't see anyone who's very individualistic."

The 'Suedehead' singer recently said that it would be worth being dead "just to get away from Victoria Beckham".

Sounds like Morrissey being Morrissey to me... more interesting artists have emerged in the last couple of years than they have for ages. There's a lot of crap about, but a lot of good stuff about too. TBH Morrissey is kind of boring himself these days... how about making an electropop album, or finally coming out?

Yep, Moz is pretty much echoing everything that I've been saying on the Coldplay thread.... Today's pop stars are indeed an incredibly boring and stale lot.... Who's to blame...? Well, it's probably a combination of the likes of Watertw@t (who started the rot back in the late 80s...), Cowell, Fuller, Walsh, X-Factor, Pop Idol, etc, and the general public who act like a bunch of compliant sheep and worship at the alter of this utter mediocrity....

It's weird though, cos in places such as Germany and Scandinavia, there's far more acceptance of the "alternative" and metal scenes....

The thing I find most alarming about that article is that he's described as the 'Suedehead' singer - that was twenty f***ing years ago!

Yeah, pretty lame that really.... The least they could've said was, "the Irish Blood, English Heart singer"...... He has kind of moved on since the "suedehead" days....

Moz makes classic British pop music, what's the problem....? His solo stuff is different to the stuff he was doing with The Smiths.... Why should he just do an "electropop" album...? And what's so "new" about electropop anyway, most of these "electropop" bands around just now are re-making what the likes of Human League and Visage were doing 20-odd years ago.... I guess this means that Mariah Carey's next album should be Death Metal or summat.....?

As for him "coming out", I do believe he did actually do this a few years back now, but his fans have known for about 20 bloody years he was gay in any case, it was hardly ever necessary for him to make it "official"......

thats 30 YEARS ago m8!

oh i think hes right, what new innovative acts are out now? ok there have always been acts like that in the alternative scene, and underground, never getting recognition in the mainstream.

i blame watertwat et al, he dumbed down music for a new generation...who have now grown up with the acceptance that manufactured pop pap is ok... and arguably it IS in small doses, but the kylie generation are now the young mums/dads watching brain dead tv like x factor etc and cheap, manufactured, disposable pop music has a huge following of people who simply dont care.

i remember the time when to be 'manufactured' was NOT acceptable and such artists were derided because music was an ART form, not simply a money making excercise.

When they were in League 1, Nottingham Forest were referred to as European Cup winners, despite their arrival in League 1 (2005) being 25 years after winning the European Cup.

The 'Suedehead' singer recently said that it would be worth being dead "just to get away from Victoria Beckham".

LOL

It's impossible for a Popstar to be entertaining in these times, they'd get arrested.

Morrissey, once again, says what many others think but are too scared to say.

Who's to blame?

Simon Cowell of course..... and his band of not-so-merry men who are hellbent on turning the art form of music into just another production line money-making machine - as I've said on another thread here - Cowell packs his turgid shows with air-grabbing 80s power ballads - he's a total 80s child - but it's glaringly obvious the fool listened to all the wrong music in the 80s.

I don't think you could ever accuse Moz of being boring - next to who? OK, his new album is a shoddy affair..... but Ringleader and especially You Are The Quarry were absolute masterpieces - boring?

Never.

However, I don't agree that today's singers don't take risks - it's a shame because it appears he's not heard Antony and the Johnsons, Florence and the Machine, Our Broken Garden or latter-day Portishead - all of whom are wonderfully obscure, abstract and leftfield.

I agree with him. Where are all the 'characters' in the music business today? We just have an endless supply of bland clones. I like my music stars to be controversial, individual and witty.

This current batch of 'stars' don't have an original thought between them. Or a personality between them for that matter.

Where are the David Bowies of today?

We are all doomed :drama:

Well the problem with the music industry nowadays is that it's ALL about making money! Acts are manufactured or signed to make money i.e. they look at someone who's successful at the moment and sign or manufacture acts that are just like the current big star(s) of the moment. (Amy Winehouse > Duffy, The Feeling > Scouting For Girls, Girls Aloud > The Saturdays etc. ) Don't get me started on Cowell and the reality shows -_- Record companies not taking more 'risk taking' acts and not giving them a lot of time to develop. This leads to too many people 'playng it safe' which even Madonna does nowadays!

These days though you don't necessarily need a record company so it's a lot easier to find more original artists but it doesn't necessarily give them a personality. Even when they do the best ones don't usually make it to the mainstream which is sad really. There are some who I wouldn't call 'boring' at all who are around right now but they aren't really 'risk takers'.

Moz is talking about "pop stars" though..... As in, more mainstream acts, and he's correct, Leona Lewis, The Shaturdays, Coldplay, The Kooks, Lily Allen, etc, fukkin' dreadful, each one..... The acts you describe are, as you say, more leftfield, non-mainstream..... There's a lot to like in non-mainstream and the genuinely Alternative acts....

Oh Dear......

Where to begin as i disagree with EVERY point made here.

Tell me who are the more mainstream artists who have appeared in the last couple of years? The only artists whom are interesting on are the outskirts of popular music (either too alternative or too left field) to make major inroads into the chart.

Please don't tell me you find someone like the annoying publicity attention seeker Lily Allen interesting? Even though her second album is a vast improvement on her awful bar the singles debut album.

As for Morrissey being boring...... For acerbic quotes there is no one better in the music industry, as proved by his enigmatic appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show last nioght where he totally owned the host.

Whilst as for finally coming out? Mmmmm, I'd say someone does not listen to Stephen Patrick Morrissey's lyrics too closely as The Smiths debut Top 40 hit from 1983 pretty much gave the game away.

Morrissey - This Charming Man (Jonathan Ross Show 2009)

Whilst this stunning Strokes-a-fide version of this seminal pop classic shows more invention & imagination than well over 95% of the Top 40 IMHO.

I'll give you that that's an amazing version, and his work with the Smiths and his early solo material are unsurpassed. He's made the odd classic since then, but I found it quite difficult to sit through the whole of Ringleader Of The Tormentors without nodding off. Obviously, I and everyone else know he's gay. I just wish he would do something to shock people again and prove that he's not stuck in the 80s (methinks the lady doth protest too much...) Mind you I guess the nude picture that's surfaced lately goes some of the way

.... but i think 'shock' is for the young, old people trying to 'shock' usually comes across as sad and rather pathetic.

Very true.... I mean, did you see the recent pictures of Madonna......? Oh dear...... 20 years ago, those would be fine, but now, it just looks a bit, well, desperate.....

I really dont think I'd want to see a "naked Moz" pic either tbh..... It seems pretty unlikely that it's actually genuine tbh, photoshopped methinks.....?

That's quite an ironic statement considering that most of today's acts are totally ripping off stuff from the 80s......   So surely Moz being so "stuck in the 80s" actually makes him very contemporary and up-to-date...... :P

Don't make me post it

It's from the inside cover of the new single...
