Nine Inch Nails have announced that they will tour with a newly-reformed Jane's Addiction in what will be the last NIN live shows for some time.

Frontman Trent Reznor claimed that when the bands played together earlier in their career it "set the stage" for the success of Nirvana as well as founding the Lollapalooza festival franchise.

Reznor said: "These performances essentially created and defined the term 'alternative' rock in the US.

"These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and p***ies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and sincere.

"I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while... After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year."

He added that the shows would be less scripted and more raw and spontaneous than last year's 'Lights In The Sky' tour.

Last week, it emerged that NIN and Britney Spears were sharing a rehearsal studio, with Spears's manager claiming that Reznor and Spears were "getting along famously".

The prospect of NIN and Jane's Addiction touring together is giving me a mental orgasm to be honest..... Two absolutely brilliant bands, whom I have had the privelege to see play live.... I was at one of the Lollapalooza shows where NIN played (yes, I am THAT old, LOL)..... Fukkin' AWESOME just isn't the word, an unforgettable experience.... This was in the days when "alternative" music really WAS alternative..... I wouldn't want to go to Lollapalooza now, it's really become far too corporate.....

I hope this tour comes to UK, I would honestly pay any price to see NIN and Jane's Addiction share a stage...... It's a bit sad to think that Trent is thinking about making NIN "disappear" though.... But, maybe after 20 years he may feel that he's really done all he can do with NIN, the flurry of activity over the past few years has been astounding and he's taken the concept of music on the internet to pretty amazing places, I would be incredibly sad to see the potential end of NIN, but going out on a high and leaving us wanting more would be infinitely preferable to treading water I feel....

I've been a fan of NIN since "Head Like A Hole", WAAAAAAAAY back, 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the release of "Pretty Hate Machine", still the best NIN album for me (for a LOT of personal and emotional reasons), and one of my favourite albums of all time, a brilliant record, a classic in every way and so utterly, utterly inspirational to so many artists over the years that you just cant quantify it....
